Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the
Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua),4 and the door which gives access to
the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons
of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made
sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through
water in the word.”5

These expressions of piety extend the liturgical life of the Church, but do not
replace it. They “should be so drawn up that they harmonize with the
liturgical seasons, accord with the sacred liturgy, are in some way derived
from it and lead the people to it, since in fact the liturgy by its very nature
is far superior to any of them.”179

Another difficulty, especially for those who sincerely want to pray, is
dryness. Dryness belongs to contemplative prayer when the heart is separated from
God, with no taste for thoughts, memories, and feelings, even spiritual ones.
This is the moment of sheer faith clinging faithfully to Jesus in his agony and
in his tomb. “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it
remains alone; but if dies, it bears much fruit.”18 If dryness is
due to the lack of roots, because the word has fallen on rocky soil, the battle
requires conversion.19

It is in the Church, in communion with all the baptized, that the Christian fulfills
his vocation. From the Church he receives the Word of God containing the
teachings of “the law of Christ.”72 From the Church he
receives the grace of the sacraments that sustains him on the “way.”
From the Church he learns the example of holiness and recognizes its model and
source in the all-holy Virgin Mary; he discerns it in the authentic witness of
those who live it; he discovers it in the spiritual tradition and long history
of the saints who have gone before him and whom the liturgy celebrates in the
rhythms of the sanctoral cycle.

Christ is the center of all Christian life. the bond with him takes precedence
over all other bonds, familial or social.113 From the very beginning of
the Church there have been men and women who have renounced the great good of
marriage to follow the Lamb wherever he goes, to be intent on the things of the
Lord, to seek to please him, and to go out to meet the Bridegroom who is
coming.114 Christ himself has invited certain persons to follow him in
this way of life, of which he remains the model:

As leaven in the dough, the newness of the kingdom should make the earth
“rise” by the Spirit of Christ.119 This must be shown by the
establishment of justice in personal and social, economic and international
relations, without ever forgetting that there are no just structures without
people who want to be just.
