The use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life. Their
use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offense. Clandestine
production of and trafficking in drugs are scandalous practices. They
constitute direct co-operation in evil, since they encourage people to
practices gravely contrary to the moral law.

Christ, high priest and unique mediator, has made of the Church “a
kingdom, priests for his God and Father.”20 The whole community of
believers is, as such, priestly. the faithful exercise their baptismal
priesthood through their participation, each according to his own vocation, in
Christ’s mission as priest, prophet, and king. Through the sacraments of
Baptism and Confirmation the faithful are “consecrated to be . . . a holy
priesthood.”21

The spiritual writers, paraphrasing Matthew 7:7, summarize in this way the
dispositions of the heart nourished by the word of God in prayer “Seek in
reading and you will find in meditating; knock in mental prayer and it will be
opened to you by contemplation.”5

We believe that God created the world according to his wisdom.141 It is
not the product of any necessity whatever, nor of blind fate or chance. We believe
that it proceeds from God’s free will; he wanted to make his creatures share in
his being, wisdom and goodness: “For you created all things, and by your
will they existed and were created.”142 Therefore the Psalmist
exclaims: “O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made
them all”; and “The LORD is good to all, and his compassion is over
all that he has made.”143 God creates “out of nothing”

In that sin man preferred himself to God and by that very act scorned him. He
chose himself over and against God, against the requirements of his creaturely
status and therefore against his own good. Created in a state of holiness, man
was destined to be fully “divinized” by God in glory. Seduced by the
devil, he wanted to “be like God”, but “without God, before God,
and not in accordance with God”.279
