The sixth beatitude proclaims, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they
shall see God.”³⁰⁶ “Pure in heart” refers to those who
have attuned their intellects and wills to the demands of God’s holiness,
chiefly in three areas: charity;³⁰⁷ chastity or sexual rectitude;³⁰⁸
love of truth and orthodoxy of faith.³⁰⁹ There is a connection between

The kingdom belongs to the poor and lowly, which means those who have accepted
it with humble hearts. Jesus is sent to “preach good news to the
poor”;²⁵³ he declares them blessed, for “theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.”²⁵⁴ To them – the “little ones” the Father
is pleased to reveal what remains hidden from the wise and the
learned.²⁵⁵ Jesus shares the life of the poor, from the cradle to the
cross; he experiences hunger, thirst and privation.²⁵⁶ Jesus identifies
himself with the poor of every kind and makes active love toward them the
condition for entering his kingdom.²⁵⁷

The name one receives is a name for eternity. In the kingdom, the mysterious
and unique character of each person marked with God’s name will shine forth in
splendor. “To him who conquers . . . I will give a white stone, with a new
name written on the stone which no one knows except him who receives
it.”⁸⁸ “Then I looked, and Lo, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb,
and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand who had his name and his

The sacraments are “of the Church” in the double sense that they are
“by her” and “for her.” They are “by the Church,”
for she is the sacrament of Christ’s action at work in her through the mission
of the Holy Spirit. They are “for the Church” in the sense that “the
sacraments make the Church,”³⁵ since they manifest and communicate
to men, above all in the Eucharist, the mystery of communion with the God who
is love, One in three persons.

Finally, Baptism is prefigured in the crossing of the Jordan River by which the
People of God received the gift of the land promised to Abraham’s descendants,

The ordinary ministers of Baptism are the bishop and priest and, in the Latin
Church, also the deacon.⁵⁷ In case of necessity, any person, even
someone not baptized, can baptize, if he has the required intention. the
intention required is to will to do what the Church does when she baptizes, and
to apply the Trinitarian baptismal formula. the Church finds the reason for
this possibility in the universal saving will of God and the necessity of
Baptism for salvation.⁵⁸
