Catechesis has to reveal in all clarity the joy and the demands of the way of
Christ.22 Catechesis for the “newness of life”23 in
him should be:
-a catechesis of the Holy Spirit, the interior Master of life according to
Christ, a gentle guest and friend who inspires, guides, corrects, and
strengthens this life;
-a catechesis of grace, for it is by grace that we are saved and again it is by
grace that our works can bear fruit for eternal life;
-a catechesis of the beatitudes, for the way of Christ is summed up in the
beatitudes, the only path that leads to the eternal beatitude for which the
human heart longs;
-a catechesis of sin and forgiveness, for unless man acknowledges that he is a
sinner he cannot know the truth about himself, which is a condition for acting
justly; and without the offer of forgiveness he would not be able to bear this
truth;
-a catechesis of the human virtues which causes one to grasp the beauty and
attraction of right dispositions towards goodness;
-a catechesis of the Christian virtues of faith, hope, and charity, generously
inspired by the example of the saints; -a catechesis of the twofold commandment
of charity set forth in the Decalogue;
-an ecclesial catechesis, for it is through the manifold exchanges of
“spiritual goods” in the “communion of saints” that
Christian life can grow, develop, and be communicated.

The first commandment condemns polytheism. It requires man neither to believe
in, nor to venerate, other divinities than the one true God. Scripture
constantly recalls this rejection of “idols, (of) silver and gold, the
work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not
see.” These empty idols make their worshippers empty: “Those who make
them are like them; so are all who trust in them.”42 God, however,
is the “living God”43 who gives life and intervenes in
history.

As
long as a child lives at home with his parents, the child should obey his
parents in all that they ask of him when it is for his good or that of the
family. “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the
Lord.”22 Children should also obey the reasonable directions of
their teachers and all to whom their parents have entrusted them. But if a
child is convinced in conscience that it would be morally wrong to obey a
particular order, he must not do so.
As they grow up, children should continue to respect their parents. They should
anticipate their wishes, willingly seek their advice, and accept their just
admonitions. Obedience toward parents ceases with the emancipation of the
children; not so respect, which is always owed to them. This respect has its
roots in the fear of God, one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

theory that makes profit the exclusive norm and ultimate end of economic
activity is morally unacceptable. the disordered desire for money cannot but
produce perverse effects. It is one of the causes of the many conflicts which
disturb the social order.203
A system that “subordinates the basic rights of individuals and of groups
to the collective organization of production” is contrary to human
dignity.204 Every practice that reduces persons to nothing more than a
means of profit enslaves man, leads to idolizing money, and contributes to the
spread of atheism. “You cannot serve God and mammon.”205
