This prayer can be summed up in three points which constitute the sum of salvation and even of perfection, so that we can not add anything to it: namely, that the disciples are kept from evil, sanctified in the truth and glorified with him. “Father,” he said, “I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they can contemplate your glory” (Jn 17,24). Happy those for whom the judge himself pleads: he intercedes for them and must be loved with as much honor as the one to whom he addresses his prayers. The Father will not refuse him the wish of his lips, because he shares with him a single will and one power, since there is only one God. Everything he asks will necessarily be accomplished, because his word is powerful and his will efficacious. For everything that exists, “he said and it was done, he commanded and it was created” (PS 32.9). “I want,” he said, “that where I am, they are too with me”. What certainty for believers! Provided, at least, that they do not reject the grace they received. Because this insurance is not offered to the apostles only, or to their companions, but to all those who by their word will believe in the Word of God: “I do not pray for them only, he says, but for those also who thanks to their word will believe in me” (Jn 17,20).

“They that uselessly observe vanities have forsaken their own mercy” (cf. Jon 2:9 LXX). By nature God is merciful and ready to save through clemency those whom he is unable to save by justice. As for us, through our vice we lose the mercy reserved for us and offering itself to us. (…) Although mercy may be offended, namely God Himself, for “God is merciful and good, patient and full of pity” (cf. Ps 144:8 LXX), yet mercy does not abandon those attached to vanities, she does not curse them, but waits for them to return, while they intentionally abandon the mercy which is in front of them. (…) “But I will sacrifice to thee with the voice of praise and thanksgiving. All that I have vowed I will pay to thee, Lord of my salvation” (cf. Jon 2:10 LXX). (…) But I, who have been devoured for the salvation of the many, in offering myself will offer a sacrifice in accents of praise and thanksgiving. For “Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed” (1 Cor 5:7). True Pontiff and Lamb, he offered himself for us. — And I will give you thanks, he says, as I gave you thanks when I said: “I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth” (cf. Mt 11:25) and fulfil those vows I made for the salvation of all, so that “nothing you have given me should ever perish” (cf. Jn 6:39) We see what, in his passion, the Lord promised for our salvation. Let us not make Jesus a liar, and let us be pure, detached from all sin, so that he may offer us to God, to whom he had promised us.

It is said that in Heaven we shall be like to God, ” because we shall see Him as He is “. Immediately the blessed soul sees God, it is identified with Him in the intellect by truth, and in the will by love. In the measure possible, the soul is, — not equal evidently, — but like to God : the Beatific Vision works this transformation, rendering the soul like to God, to such a degree that it is united to Him in unity. Now, during this life, what is the prelude to the vision that the elect enjoy ? Prayer through faith. The soul by contemplating God, through faith, in prayer, sees His perfections in all truth, it surrenders itself to this truth ; and thus beholding in God the Sovereign and Unique Good, its will is united to this Divine will, fount of all beatitude for the soul; and the more powerful this adherence is, the more the soul is united to God. This is why prayer in faith is so precious for the soul. We ought to wish to reach a high degree in this prayer, that is to sav to attain to this union full of love and simplicity which results in an outpouring of the most pure Divine light Under the ordinary conditions of His providence, God does not give Himself to the soul with this plenitude until the evening of life, when the soul has proved, by it’s constant fidelity to the inspirations of grace, that it belongs wholly to God, and in all things seeks but Him alone. We ought to tend to this blessed state, to which many religious souls are most certainly called. Happy state wherein the soul that is ll for God finds the prelude to that eternal union of endless beatitude.
