SAINT WALDEBERT (WALBERT OR GAUBERT)
SAINT WALDEBERT
Saint Waldebert, Benedictine abbot, sometimes is listed as Walbert and Gaubert. He was born a Frankish nobleman and gave up the aristocratic and military life to enter the monastery of Luxeuil, France.
After the death of Abbot Saint Eustace he was elected abbot in 628. He was head of the monastery for some forty years and was responsible for ending adherence to the rule of Saint Columban and instituting the rule of Saint Benedict. He won freedom for the community from episcopal jurisdiction and brought Luxeuil to the height of its influence and glory in the West. Waldebert also helped Saint Salaberga to found her famed convent at Laon.
Feastday is May 2.
