In time of trial the man who genuinely neither wants nor desires anything but God must hide himself in him and wait patiently for calmness to return… Who knows where or how it will please God to come back and fill him with his gifts? As for you, wait patiently in the shadow of the divine will; this is worth a hundred times more than spurts of flashy virtue… For God’s gifts are not God and we ought to rejoice in him alone, not in his gifts. Yet our nature is so greedy, so self-centred, that it insinuates itself into everything, grabbing hold of what does not belong to it and thus tarnishing God’s gifts and impeding God’s most precious work… But as for you, immerse yourself in Christ, in his poverty and purity, his obedience, love and all his virtues. The Holy Spirit’s gifts are given to man in him: faith, hope and charity, truth and interior joy and peace in the Holy Spirit. We also find abandonment in him and sweet patience by which we receive all things from God with a tranquil heart. All that God permits and decrees, prosperity and adversity, joy or sorrow, all work together for man’s good (Rom 8,28). The smallest of events to happen to a man was seen eternally by God, it pre-exists in him, it takes place as he has willed and not otherwise. So be at peace! This peacefulness in all things is only learned in true detachment and the interior life… Such is the lot of the noble man when he is firmly established in resting his soul in God, in the desire for God alone that throws light on everything: all is purified by Christ along the way.

The going forth of a contemplative is a heavenly life… for by means of blissful love he transcends his creaturely state and finds and savors the riches and delight which God is himself and which he causes ceaselessly to flow forth into the hidden depths of the spirit, where the spirit bears a likeness to God’s own nobility. When an interior, contemplative person has thus attained his eternal image and, in this purity and by means of the Son, has possessed the Father’s bosom, then he is enlightened with divine truth… You should know that the heavenly Father, as a living ground and with all that lives in him, has turned actively toward his Son as toward his own eternal wisdom (Pr 8:22), and that this same wisdom, together with all that lives in it, has actively turned back toward the Father, that is, toward that same ground from which it comes forth. In this meeting between the Father and the Son there arises the third Person, the Holy Spirit, who is the love of them both and who is one with them in the same nature. In a way characterized by both activity and blissful enjoyment, the Spirit embraces and penetrates the Father and Son and all that lives in both of them with such great riches and joy that all creatures must remain silent before this, for the incomprehensible wonder which resides in this love eternally transcends the understanding of all creatures. But when a person understands this wonder and savors it without amazement, then has his spirit been raised above itself and been made one with the Spirit of God; it savors and sees without measure, like God himself—the riches which it has itself become in the Unity of the living ground where it possesses itself in accordance with the mode of its uncreated being… Now this blessed meeting is actively renewed in us… For just as the Father ceaselessly sees all things anew in the birth of the Son, so too are all things loved anew by the Father and the Son in the flowing forth of the Holy Spirit. This is the active meeting of the Father and the Son, in which we are lovingly embraced by means of the Holy Spirit in eternal love.

During his public life Our Lord gradually reveals and explains his mediation: “I am the way, the truth and the life” he said (Jn 14:6). (…) Son of God, both eternally generated as the Word of the Father and pronounced in time as the incarnate Word, Jesus carries within Him the uncreated light which is God and all the light that God wanted to manifest to the world, the life which is within the Trinity and the life which God wants to spread in souls. In Him are all the treasures of wisdom and grace and it is from His fullness that we receive them. (…) Our grace is filial; this is an essential note. We have received a filial spirit “which makes us cry to God: Father” (Rm 8:15). Within the Holy Trinity we are sons or we are not. Now the Father has only one Son, he is his Word. The eternal rhythm of life within the Holy Trinity is immutable: God the Father, through his knowledge of Himself, generates the Word which expresses it; the Father and the Son, by a common spiration of love, produce the Holy Spirit. Centuries, no more than eternity, will change nothing in this movement. How can we enter and participate in it as our supernatural vocation requires? Not otherwise than through adoption and complete possession such that it creates a certain unity with one of the divine Persons. The Word became incarnate, took a humanity which he carried, happy captive, within this glory that the Word had before the world existed. Through this holy humanity of Christ, the Word seizes and carries away all men who allow themselves to be seized by his grace. The whole diffused and complete Christ is placed, through his unity with the Word, under the eternally fruitful paternity of the Father of light and mercy, and with Him breathes the love of the Holy Spirit who, Spirit of the Father and of the Son, consequently becomes the Spirit of the Church and ours.
