Wednesday, March 22 : Blessed Marie-Eugène of the Child Jesus
Obedience is a virtue that unites man to God in submitting him to the divine will, manifested by God himself or His representitives. One can say this virtue is theological. In fact she is connected to the virtue of justice, which requires us to give to God what is due Him. God has sovereign rights over us who are His creatures. The execution of this divine mission entrusted to us, in all of its detail, is a duty imposed on us by God’s absolute sovereignty. God’s will, and its realisation, towards which we are required to strive is infinitely wise. It procures both God’s Glory and our happiness. Nothing is more reasonable than that which God asks of us, this Master exercises His power for our good and respecting our liberty. The wisdom of the designs of God, just as His sovereign power, is the foundation of our obedience… Obedience always walks in the light. She imposes submission of our intelligence so as to allow us to surpass our own ‘lights’, which by their nature are limited, to allow us to enter the great light of God. Surely yet mysteriously, she indicates to the soul the paths traced by divine Wisdom.
