Wednesday, October 9 : Blessed Marie-Eugène of the Child Jesus
These beginners with an ardent and generous soul, filled with great desires, (…) they are following Jesus; these are his apostles at the start of public life. They saw their master plunged for long hours in a silent prayer which completely absorbs Him. They would like to know how to realize this attitude, follow their master to these peaceful and mysterious depths. Let us reread the evangelical scene: one day that Jesus was in prayer in a certain place, one of his disciples told him when he had finished: “Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples”. He said to them: “When you want to pray, say: Our Father who are on the heaven…” (…) They asked for the science of prayer and it is a vocal prayer that Jesus teaches them. But what a vocal prayer! Simple and sublime which, in its concise formulas, specifies the filial attitude of the Christian before God, lists the wishes and the requests he must submit. The Our Father is the perfect prayer that the church puts on the lips of the priest at the most solemn moment of the sacrifice. It is the prayer of the little ones who do not know anything else, the prayer of the saints who savor these formulas so deep. (…) Often, therefore, at whatever degree of spiritual life that we are, whatever our fervor or our drought, to pray well and to learn to pray as is necessary, humbly and calmly tell our Father, the prayer that Jesus himself has composed for us. By teaching the Our Father, Jesus consecrated to us the excellence of vocal prayer.
