The Christ whom we meet in the Sacrament is… the one same Christ who is present in the Eucharistic Bread of every place on earth. This means that we can encounter him only together with all others. We can only receive him in unity. Is not this what the Apostle Paul said…? In writing to the Corinthians he said: “Because the loaf of bread is one, we, many though we are, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf” (I Cor 10: 17). The consequence is clear: we cannot communicate with the Lord if we do not communicate with one another. If we want to present ourselves to him, we must also take a step towards meeting one another. To do this we must learn the great lesson of forgiveness: we must not let the gnawings of resentment work in our soul, but must open our hearts to the magnanimity of listening to others, open our hearts to understanding them… The Eucharist, let us repeat, is the sacrament of unity. Unfortunately, however, Christians are divided, precisely in the sacrament of unity. Sustained by the Eucharist, we must feel all the more roused to striving with all our strength for that full unity which Christ ardently desired in the Upper Room (Jn 17,21-22)… I would like to reaffirm my desire to assume as a fundamental commitment working with all my might for the re-establishment of the full and visible unity of all Christ’s followers. I am aware that expressions of good will do not suffice for this. We need concrete acts that penetrate souls and shake consciences, prompting each one to that inner conversion that is the necessary condition for any progress on the path of ecumenism.

Jesus said to his disciples:  “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.
You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.’
But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raqa,’ will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna.
Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you,
leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison.
Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”

Brothers and sisters: To this day, whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over the hearts of the children of Israel,
but whenever a person turns to the Lord the veil is removed.
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
All of us, gazing with unveiled face on the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, as from the Lord who is the Spirit.
Therefore, since we have this ministry through the mercy shown us, we are not discouraged.
And even though our gospel is veiled, it is veiled for those who are perishing,
in whose case the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so that they may not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
For we do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves for the sake of Jesus.
For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of (Jesus) Christ.

The blessed apostles… were the first to see Christ hanging on the cross. They mourned his death and were seized with fear before the miracle of his resurrection but, very soon, transported by love at this manifestation of his power, they no longer hesitated to shed their own blood to prove the truth of what they had seen. Now think, my brethren, of what was asked of these men: to go out into the whole world preaching that a dead man was raised and ascended into heaven, suffering for the preaching of this truth whatever pleased an enraged world: privations, chains, torments, burnings, wild beasts, cross and death. Was this for some unknown cause? Was it for his own glory that Peter died ? For his own advantage that he preached? He would die; another than he was glorified. He was put to death; another worshipped. Only the burning flame of charity joined to conviction of the truth can explain a courage like this! What they preached they had seen. People don’t die for some truth of which they are not sure. Or should they have denied what they had seen? They did not deny it: they preached that death which they knew while living; they knew for what life they were despising the present life. They knew for what happiness they were bearing transitory trials, for what reward they were treading underfoot all these sufferings. Their faith! It weighed more in the scales than the whole world.

The Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ, she warmed him up in her arms, she wrapped him in swaddling clothes and surrounded him with motherly care. It is the same Jesus of which we now receive the body and drink the redeeming blood in the sacrament of the altar. This is what the Catholic Faith professes, this is what the Church teaches faithfully. No human language could glorify well enough the one in who took flesh, as we know, “the mediator between God and human race” (1Tm 2,5). No human praise is fit for the one whose pure womb produced the fruit that is food for our souls, that is the one who testifies by his own words: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever”. And, in fact, we who have been chased away from Paradise because of a fruit, it is also by another type of food that we find the joys of Paradise again. Eve took and ate a food and we were condemned to an eternal fast; Mary gave out another food, and the doors of the heavenly feast were opened to us.

and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot,
and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon.
They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.
And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them.

في كنيسة روما، كان الطوباويّ لورنسيوس يمارس أعماله الشمّاسيّة. فهُنا كان يوزّع على المؤمنين دم الرّب يسوع المسيح المقدّس، وهنا سفك دمه من أجل اسم الرّب يسوع المسيح… لقد أوضح يوحنّا الرسول سرّ العشاء السرّي عندما قال أنّ الرّب يسوع “قد بَذَلَ نفْسَه في سَبيلنِا. فعلَينا نَحنُ أَيضًا أَن نَبذُلَ نُفوسَنا في سَبيلِ إِخوَتِنا.” (1يو 3: 16). يا إخوتي، لقد فَهِمَ القدّيس لورنسيوس هذا وعمل به. وقد حضّر هذه التّقدمة بواسطة ما تناولَه عن هذه المائدة. لقد أحبّ الرّب يسوع المسيح في حياته، واقتدى به في موته. ونحن أيضًا يا إخوتي، إذا كنّا نحبّه فعلاً، علينا أن نقتدي به. وأفضل برهان نقدّمه له عن حبّنا، هو في الاقتداء به كما قال القدّيس بطرس في رسالته الأولى: “فقَد تأَلَّمَ المسيحُ أَيضًا مِن أَجلِكم وترَكَ لَكم مِثالاً لِتقتَفوا آثارَه” (1بط 2: 21)… نجد في حديقة الربّ جميع أنواع الزّهور: ليس فقط ورود الشّهداء، وإنّما أيضًا زنابق العذارى، وورود المتزوّجين وبنفسج الأرامل. يا أحبّائي، لا يجب على أيّ فئة من الناس أن تَيأس من دعوتها: فمن أجلنا جميعًا تألّم الرّب يسوع المسيح… على المسيحيّ إذًا أن يفهم كيف يتبع الرّب يسوع المسيح، من دون الحاجة إلى سفك دمه، وبدون مواجهة عذابات الاستشهاد. قال القدّيس بولس في موضوع المسيح الربّ: “هو الَّذي في صُورةِ الله لم يَعُدَّ مُساواتَه للهِ غَنيمَة”. يا لهذه العظمة! “بل تَجرَّدَ مِن ذاتِه مُتَّخِذًا صُورةَ العَبْد وصارَ على مِثالِ البَشَر وظَهَرَ في هَيئَةِ إِنْسان” (في 2: 6-7). يا لهذا التّنازل! الرّب يسوع المسيح قد تنازل: أنظر أيّها المسيحي ما هو في مُتَناوَلِك. فالرّب يسوع “وضَعَ نَفْسَه وأَطاعَ حَتَّى المَوت مَوتِ الصَّليب” (في 2: 8): فلماذا التكبّر إذًا؟… ثمّ، بعد أن انحدر الرّب يسوع المسيح إلى أقصى درجات الاتّضاع وبعد أن سَحقَ الموت، صعد إلى السماء: فلنتبعهُ.
