Friday, October 11 : Saint Catherine of Siena
[Sainte Catherine heard God tell her:] It is very true that the demon never sleeps. His example teaches us a lesson, he takes advantage of our negligence , and he makes use of sleeping, a time from which we could benefit so much. But to perfect souls, his vigilance cannot harm, because he cannot bear the ardor of their charity, nor the smell of this union they have with me, the ocean of peace. The soul cannot be deceived, as long as it remains united to me; The demon flees from her, like the fly from the boiling pot on the fire, by the fear that she has to burn there. But, if the pot was lukewarm, the fly would no longer be afraid, it would enter into it; Although often, she quickly gets out, because she finds her much warmer than she imagined. This is the case for the soul which has not yet reached the perfect state. The demon believing it lukewarm, enters it by temptations as varied as it is multiple. But if he finds, that this soul is in process of knowing itself and conceives the pain and regret of her faults. She resists the attack. So that she does not consent, she chainsher will in the bonds of hatred of sin and the love of virtue. Ô that all souls rejoice, which experiences these many assaults! It is the way that leads to this sweet and glorious state!
