Monday, August 12 : Saint Ambrose
When Christ reconciled the world with God, he certainly did not need reconciliation for himself. For which of his sins should have appeased God, He who had not committed any? Also, when the Jews claim the didrachm required by law, Jesus said to Peter: “Simon, from whom do the kings of the earth perceive tribute or taxes? Of their sons or foreigners? Pierre replied: “Foreigners. “Jesus resumed:” The sons are therefore exempt. But in order not to make a scandal, throws the hook and the first fish that you will take you will open your mouth; You will find a coin there: take it and give it for me and for you. »(Mt 17, 25-27) Christ shows us by that that he had to expiate nothing for personal sins, because he was not a slave to sin but that, Son of God, he was free from all fault. The son was free and the slave in sin. Since he is free from everything, Jesus therefore pays nothing for the redemption of his soul, he whose blood could largely pay the redemption of sins around the world. He has the right to release the others, he who has no debt for himself. But I go further. Christ is not the only one who should not pay anything for the redemption or the expiation of personal sins. If you envisage any believing man, you can say that no one should pay for his own atonement, because Christ has expired for the redemption of all. Who is the man who would find his own blood capable of redeeming him, when Christ shed his for the redemption of all?
