Monday, September 18 : Basil of Seleucia
“Lord my servant is paralyzed and in bed and is suffering greatly. Even though he is a slave, someone who is in the clutches of this evil is no less of a man. Don’t look at the lowliness of the slave but rather at the greatness of the evil”. This is what the centurion said. And what does supreme Goodness have to say? “I will come and heal him. I who, out of concern for men, became man, I who came for the sake of all, will despise no one. I will heal him.” By the speed of his promise Christ directs the faith of him who said: “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter my house.” Do you see how the Lord, like a huntsman, flushes out his hidden faith? “Only say the word and my servant will be healed of the evil, set free from servitude to his sickness. For I who am subject to superiors have soldiers under me. I say to one: ‘Go!’ and he goes, to another: ‘Come!” and he comes. In this way I have known the authority of your power. Starting from that which I have myself I have recognized that which is greater. I see the armies of healings, I see the ranks of miracles awaiting your orders. Send them against the sickness, send them just as I send a soldier.” Jesus was astonished and said: “I have not found such great faith in Israel. He who was a stranger to our call, who had no part in the people of the covenant, who had no share in the miracles of Moses, who had not been initiated into his laws, who had not known the prophetic words, has preceded all the rest by his faith.”
