«Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy» (Mt 5,7). It is said, concerning mercy, that it surpasses all God’s other works. Hence a merciful person is someone truly divine since mercy is born of charity and goodness. For this reason God’s true friends are very merciful and more welcoming towards sinners and those who suffer than others who do not have this charity. And as mercy is born of the charity we ought to show each other…, if we don’t practise it our Lord will demand an account of it on judgement day… This kind of mercy doesn’t just consist in gifts but is also shown towards all those sufferings that can fall upon your neighbor. Anyone who sees them without manifesting real charity towards the neighbor and a genuine sympathy in all their sufferings and who does not mercifully turn a blind eye to their faults: such a person has reason to fear lest God refuses mercy to him, for «the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you» (Mt 7,2).
