Sunday, October 26 : Saint Nerses Chnorhali
The Pharisee of the law, In his prayer in the temple, Put forward the good he had accomplished In front of Your eyes who see everything. This foolish soul prided himself Comparing himself to a distant human race And this near publican Who, at the same time as he, was praying. Not only did he not get what he asked for Because of his grandiloquent language, But still his previous works of justice, He lost them because of his vain speech. But then, what will I do to my soul Who loves vice totally, Very negligent for good deeds, And is active to collect bad ones? Because I do not fulfill good deeds For which the Pharisee has glorified himself; And I’m much superior to him In the vice of the self glory and pride. But gives the voice of the publican To my healed soul, chief of the publicans, To proclaim with his own words: “My God, forgive me my sins!” »» Justify me with him, As you did for him by a single word; Humble my inner spirit, So that I am exalted by your grace.
