What great love, what charity was that of Jesus Christ when he chose the evening of the day he was to be put to death to institute a sacrament through which he would remain in our midst, to be our Father, Consoler, and all our good! Still happier than those who were alive during his mortal life, when he was only in one place and people had to come from a great distance if they were to have the joy of seeing him, now, today we find him everywhere in the world and this joy is promised to me until the world’s end. O what great love was that of God for his creatures! No indeed! Nothing could stop him when it came to showing us the greatness of his love. At that happy moment for us, all Jerusalem was on fire, all the people in an uproar, everyone was plotting his harm, everyone wanting to shed his precious blood – and yet it was precisely at that moment that he prepared for them, as for us, the most unutterable testimony of his love.
