Thursday, December 7 : Saint Bernard
Let us securely hold to the rampart; Let us lean with all our strength on the unshakable rock that is Christ, according to this word : “He placed my feet on the rock, he strengthened my steps” (Ps 39,3). Thus established and comforted, let us put contemplate: we will see what he tells us and what we will answer to him who criticizes us. (…) Then, when we have progressed somewhat in spiritual asceticism by following as a guide the Holy Spirit which scrutinizes the very depths of God, let us represent how sweet the Lord is, how good he is in himself. Let us beg with the Prophet to see the will of the Lord, let’s ask him to visit not just our hearts but His temple (cf. PS 26,4). And with him we will say again: “My soul is troubled within me, that is why I will remember you” (PS 41,7). These two things summarize the content of the whole spiritual life: at the spectacle of ourselves we are troubled and contrite for our salvation, while in the contemplation of God we breathe and the joy of the Holy Spirit gives us consolation. On the one hand, fear and humility; On the other hand, hope and charity.
