Tuesday, August 27 : Origen
Let us set out for war, as Joshua did; let us take by assault the greatest city in the world – malice –and destroy the proud walls of sin. Would you be looking all around you for the road you must take, the battlefield you must choose? No doubt you’re going to find my words surprising, and yet they are true: restrict your quest to your own self. The battle you are to give lies within you, within your inmost self lays the malice you must undermine; your enemy comes from the depths of your own heart. Nor is it I who say this, but Christ. Listen to him: “From the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, unchastity, theft, false witness, blasphemy” (Mt 15,19). Are you aware of the might of the enemy army advancing against you from the depths of your heart? Here our enemies are, massacre them at the first encounter, lay them low at first sight! If we are able to overturn their ramparts and exterminate them until not one remains to tell the tale, not one to draw breath (Jos 11,14), if not a single one remains to regain its life and rise up again in our thoughts, then Jesus will grant us great rest.
