Tuesday, June 18 : Saint Leo the Great
Whoever wishes to know if he lives in the God of which it is said: “God is admirable in all his saints” (PS 67,36), may he evaluate by a sincere examination of conscience the bottom of his heart and seek carefully with what humility he resists pride, with what benevolence he fights envy, to what extent he does not allow himself to be taken with flattering words and is delighted with the good of others; that he does not seek to avenge a wrong for a wrong, and if he prefers to let insults pass rather than losing the image and likeness of his Creator who calls on all men to know him through the benefits that he gives everyone, making “rain on the righteous and unjust and gives sun to the good and the evil” (Mt 5,45). And before concluding this scrupulous examination of multiple points, ask yourself if in the recesses of your heart is the mother of all virtues: charity. If he finds this whole heart tend towards the love of God and neighbor to the point of wanting that his enemies also receive the goods he wishes for himself, then one cannot doubt that God directs and lives within it. He welcomed Him all the better since he doesn’t seek to glorify himself but the Lord (cf. 1 Co 1,31).
