Wednesday, July 3 : Saint Thomas of Villanova
Thomas gasped this sublime cry: “My Lord and my God! (Jn 20,28). This profession of faith, greater than past disbelief, could not sound stronger: all the content of the faith is included in this brief exclamation. Wonderful penetration of faith in this man! He touches man and he calls him God. He touches one and believes the other. Had he written a thousand books, he would not have served the Church as much. With what clarity, what faith and what simplicity he calls Christ God! What a useful and necessary word for the Church of God! Thanks to it the most serious heresies were once extricated from the church. Peter was praised for having said: “You are Christ, the Son of the living God” (Mt 16,16). With more clarity yet, Thomas exclaims: “My Lord and my God! By this simple word, he confesses the two natures of Christ. “Because you have seen, Thomas, you believed; Happy those who believed without having seen ”(Jn 20, 29). This word, brothers, brings us great consolation. Whenever we say or that we write to ourselves: “Happy the eyes, happy time, sweet generation which had the chance to see and contemplate such great mysteries”, it is true because the Lord said: “Happy the eyes that have seen what you see” (Lk 10,23); But he also said: “Blessed are those who believed without having seen”. These words provide even greater consolation, they signal a greater merit. The vision gives more joy; Faith honors more.
