Wednesday, October 4 : St Hildegard of Bingen
Man must perform the works of justice in the joy of the Holy Spirit, without hesitation or murmering. He therefore should not say that he lacks either the first root placed in man by a gift of God from the beginning – the discernment of what is good -, nor the grace of the Holy Spirit which touches this same root by his counsel – the fire of grace that motivates the will. If one acts with a joyful determination, it should not be in anxiety because of what it did once, driven by a reprehensible momentum as if this primal inner root were weak or perverse. And, if he falls, once fallen into need, he should not whisper by saying to himself: “Alas, alas, what have I done to be unable to see my works in God in advance? ” He should go forward resolutely, without carrying the guilt of his past infidelity, so as not to defy God in his action, but rather to be secure without self-pity or blaming his past sins.
