You owe your whole life to Christ Jesus, for he gave his life for your life and endured bitter torments that you might not have to endure eternal torment… Is there anything that will not seem sweet to you after you have gathered into your heart all the bitter sufferings of your Lord?… As the heavens are higher than the earth (Is 55:9) so is his life higher than our life and yet it has been given for our life. As mere nothingness cannot be compared to any other thing so our life cannot be measured against his… When I have dedicated to him all that I am, all of which I am capable, it will still be like a star compared to the sun, a drop of water to a river, a single stone to a tower, a grain of sand to a mountain. I have nothing but two small things, very small indeed: my body and my soul or, rather, only one, small thing: my will. And am I not going to give it to him who has gone before so small a being as I with such blessings, to him who, in giving himself wholly has wholly redeemed me? Otherwise, were I to keep my will for myself, with what face, what eyes, what spirit or conscience would I take my refuge in the merciful heart of our God? How could I dare to pierce that strong rampart guarding Israel and cause, not just a few drops, but torrents of the blood that flows from the five parts of his body, to flow at the price of my redemption?

“أَيُّهَا ٱلْفَرِّيسِيُّونَ، أَنْتُمْ ٱلْآنَ تُطَهِّرُونَ ظَاهِرَ ٱلْكَأْسِ وَٱلصَّحْفَةِ”. كَمَا تَرَوْنَ، لَقَدْ أَشَارَ ٱلرَّبُّ يَسُوعُ فِي كَلَامِهِ عَنْ أَجْسَادِنَا بِأَسْمَاءٍ لِأَشْيَاءٍ هَشَّةٍ وَمَصْنُوعَةٍ مِنَ ٱلتُّرَابِ، قَدْ تَنْكَسِرُ عِنْدَ ٱلسَّقْطَةِ ٱلْأُولَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ. أَمَّا مَشَاعِرُ ٱلنَّفْسِ ٱلْحَمِيمَةُ، فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهَا بِتَعَابِيرِ ٱلْجَسَدِ وَبِحَرَكَاتِهِ، كَمَا أَنَّ دَاخِلَ ٱلْكَأْسِ يَظْهَرُ إِلَى ٱلْخَارِجِ. إِذًا، أَنْتُمْ تَرَوْنَ أَنَّ مَا يُدَنِّسُنَا لَيْسَ ظَاهِرَ ٱلْكَأْسِ أَوِ ٱلصَّحْفَةِ، بَلْ بَاطِنُهُ. وَكَمُعَلِّمٍ صَالِحٍ، عَلَّمَنَا ٱلرَّبُّ يَسُوعُ كَيْفَ نُطَهِّرُ أَجْسَادَنَا مِنَ ٱلدَّنَسِ، مِنْ خِلَالِ قَوْلِهِ: “فَتَصَدَّقُوا بِمَا فِيهِمَا، يَكُنْ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ لَكُمْ طَاهِرًا”. لَاحِظُوا كَمِّيَّةَ ٱلْعِلَاجَاتِ ٱلْمَوْجُودَةِ! ٱلرَّحْمَةُ تُطَهِّرُنَا. كَمَا أَنَّ كَلِمَةَ ٱللّٰهِ تُطَهِّرُنَا أَيْضًا، وَفْقًا لِمَا هُوَ مَكْتُوبٌ: “أَنْتُمْ ٱلْآنَ أَطْهَارٌ بِفَضْلِ ٱلْكَلَامِ ٱلَّذِي قُلْتُهُ لَكُمْ” (يو ١٥: ٣)… إِنَّهَا نُقْطَةُ ٱلِٱنْطِلَاقِ لِعُبُورٍ جَمِيلٍ جِدًّا: لَقَدْ دَعَانَا ٱلرَّبُّ إِلَى ٱلْبَحْثِ عَنِ ٱلْبَسَاطَةِ، وَأَدَانَ ٱلتَّعَلُّقَ بِمَا هُوَ زَائِدٌ وَأَرْضِيٌّ. أَمَّا ٱلْفَرِّيسِيُّونَ، فَهُمْ شُبِّهُوا عَنِ ٱلْحَقِّ بِٱلْكَأْسِ وَٱلصَّحْفَةِ، بِسَبَبِ ضَعْفِهِمْ: لَقَدْ رَكَّزُوا عَلَىٰ نِقَاطٍ لَا أَهَمِّيَّةَ لَهَا بِٱلنِّسْبَةِ إِلَيْنَا، فِيمَا أَهْمَلُوا تِلْكَ ٱلَّتِي تَحْمِلُ ثَمَرَةَ رَجَائِنَا. لَقَدِ ٱرْتَكَبُوا خَطَأً فَادِحًا، مِنْ خِلَالِ ٱحْتِقَارِ ٱلْأَفْضَلِ. وَلٰكِنَّ ٱلْوَعْدَ بِٱلْغُفْرَانِ يُطَبَّقُ حَتَّىٰ عَلَىٰ هٰذَا ٱلْخَطَإِ، إِنْ تَبِعَ ذٰلِكَ رَحْمَةُ ٱلصَّدَقَةِ.

” Trouble shall make him afraid, straits shall besiege him, as a king ready to the battle.” In all that the wicked man does, he is hedged in with anguish, and tribulation, and straits; in that his soul is confounded with anxiety and misgiving. One man secretly longs to seize another’s goods by force, and he toils and strains in the thoughts of his heart, that he may not be found out. Another man, forsaking truth, makes up his mind to tell a lie, that he may deceive the mind of those that hear him; but what great labour it is to guard with sufficient heed, that his deceit itself may not be found out! For he sets before his eyes what answer may be made to him by those that know the truth, and with great effort of thought he makes out how by the appliances of falsehood he may surpass the evidences of truth. He cloaks himself about on this side and on that, and against that wherein he might have been found out, he looks about for an answer resembling truth, whereas if he had been minded to tell the truth, assuredly he might have done it without pains. For the path of truth is smooth, and the road of falsehood grievous. And hence it is said by the Prophet, They have taught their tongue to speak lies, and wearied themselves to commit iniquity. [Jer. 9, 5] Therefore it is well said, Trouble shall make him afraid, and straits besiege him; in that in himself he is undone in the toilsomeness of fear, who forsakes the way of truth.

“El día tenebroso lo aterra, la angustia y la opresión lo acometen, como un rey preparado para el ataque” (Jb 15,23-24). En todos sus actos el hombre injusto es envestido por la tribulación y la angustia, ya que ansiedad y sospechas turban su corazón. Alguien que aspira en secreto a tomar el bien de otro, agota su pensamiento reflexionando en cómo evitar dejarse prender. Otro abandona la verdad y resuelve mentir para engañar al que lo escucha. ¡Qué prueba velar en la inquietud para que su engaño no sea descubierto! Se representa lo que pueden responderle los que descubren la verdad y a fuerza de reflexiones quiere saber los medios para superar a la verdad con los argumentos de la falsedad. Así, se encuentra rodeado y para poder responder se pone a buscar falsos argumentos. ¡Si quisiera decir la verdad, estaría sin tormentos! Uno es el camino de la verdad y agotadora la ruta de la mentira. Por eso esta palabra del Profeta: “Ellos no dicen la verdad; han habituado sus lenguas a mentir, están pervertidos” (Jr 9,4). Es sabiduría decir “El día tenebroso lo aterra, la angustia y la opresión lo acometen”, porque se agotan en miedos, en vez de tomar el camino de la tranquilidad, que es el de la verdad.

Where have you hidden, Beloved, and left me moaning? you fled like the stag after wounding me; I went out calling you, but you were gone. Where have you hidden? This is like saying: “O Word, my Spouse, show me where you are hidden”. In her petition she seeks the manifestation of his divine essence, because the hiding place of the Word of God is, as St. John asserts, the bosom of the Father (Jn 1:18), that is, the divine essence, which is hidden from every mortal eye and hidden from every human intellect. Isaiah proclaimed in speaking to God: “Indeed, you are a hidden God “(Is. 45:15). It is noteworthy that, however elevated God’s communications and the experiences of his presence are, and however sublime a person’s knowledge of him may be, these are not God essentially, nor are they comparable to him because, indeed, he is still hidden to the soul. Hence, regardless of all these lofty experiences, a person should think of him as hidden and seek him as one who is hidden, saying: “Where have you hidden?” Neither the sublime communication nor the sensible awareness of his nearness is a sure testimony of his gracious presence, nor are dryness and the lack of these a reflection of his absence. As a result, the prophet Job exclaims: “If he comes to me I shall not see him, and if he goes away I shall not understand” (Jb 9:11). It must be understood from this that if a person experiences some elevated spiritual communication or feeling or knowledge, it should not be thought that the experiences are similar to the clear and essential vision or possession of God, or that the communication, no matter how remarkable it is, signifies a more notable possession of God or union with him. It should be known, too, that if all these sensible and spiritual communications are wanting and individuals live in dryness, darkness, and dereliction, they must not thereby think that God is any more absent… The soul’s chief aim in this verse is not to ask for sensible devotion, in which there is neither certain nor clear possession of the Bridegroom in this life, but for the manifest presence and vision of his divine essence, in which she desires to be secure and satisfied in the next life.

Cristo nuestro Señor ha sido crucificado para liberar al género humano del naufragio de este gente… En el Antiguo Testamento Moisés había levantado, en medio de los moribundos, una serpiente de bronce atada a una estaca; había ordenado al pueblo esperar la curación mirando este signo (N 21,6s). Era este un remedio de tal potencia contra la mordedura de las serpientes, que el herido, volviéndose hacia la serpiente elevada, confiaba y en seguida recuperaba la salud. El Señor no dejó de recordar este episodio en el Evangelio cuando dijo: “Como Moisés elevó la serpiente en el desierto, así tiene que ser elevado el Hijo del hombre ” (Jn 3,14)… La serpiente es pues la primera en ser crucificada, por Moisés. Es sólo justicia, ya que el diablo fue el primero que pecó bajo la mirada del Señor (Gn 3)… Fue crucificado sobre un tronco, lo que es justo, ya que el hombre había sido engañado indirectamente por árbol del deseo; en lo sucesivo, es salvado por un tronco tomado de otro árbol… Después de la serpiente, es el hombre quien es crucificado en el Salvador, sin duda alguna, para castigar no sólo al responsable, sino también el delito. La primera cruz se venga sobre la serpiente, la segunda sobre su veneno: el veneno que por su persuasión había penetrado en el hombre es rechazado y curado… He aquí lo que hizo el Señor por su naturaleza humana: Él, el inocente, sufre; en Él la desobediencia, provocada por el famoso engaño del diablo, es enmendada; y liberado de su falta, el hombre es liberado de la muerte. Ya que tenemos por Señor, a Jesús que nos liberó por su Pasión, tengamos constantemente los ojos fijos en Él, esperemos siempre encontrar en este signo el remedio a nuestras heridas. Si el veneno de la avaricia viniera a apoderarse de nosotros, miremos la cruz, ella nos librará; si el deseo, este escorpión, nos roe, implorémosla, ella nos curará; si las mordeduras de los pensamientos de aquí abajo nos laceran, roguémosle y viviremos. He aquí las serpientes espirituales de nuestras almas: para pisotearlas, el Señor fue crucificado. Él mismo nos dice: ” Os di el poder de pisotear serpientes, escorpiones, y nada podrá dañaros ” (Lc 10,19).

قَالَ ٱلرَّبُّ يَسُوعُ: “لَمْ يَأْتِ وَقْتِي بَعْدُ، وَأَمَّا وَقْتُكُمْ فَهُوَ مُؤَاتٍ لَكُمْ أَبَدًا… ٱصْعَدُوا أَنْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلْعِيدِ، فَأَنَا لَا أَصْعَدُ إِلَى هٰذَا ٱلْعِيدِ، لِأَنَّ وَقْتِي لَمْ يَحِنْ بَعْدُ” (يو ٧: ٦ + ٨). مَا عَسَىٰ يَكُونُ هٰذَا ٱلْعِيدُ ٱلَّذِي يَدْعُونَا إِلَيْهِ رَبُّنَا، وَسَاعَتُهُ تَحِينُ فِي كُلِّ وَقْتٍ؟ إِنَّهُ ٱلْعِيدُ ٱلْأَكْثَرُ ٱرْتِفَاعًا وَٱلْأَكْثَرُ صِدْقًا، ٱلْعِيدُ ٱلْأَكْبَرُ هُوَ عِيدُ ٱلْحَيَاةِ ٱلْأَبَدِيَّةِ، أَيْ عِيدُ ٱلْغِبْطَةِ ٱلْأَبَدِيَّةِ، عِنْدَمَا نَلْتَقِي حَقًّا مَعَ ٱللّٰهِ وَجْهًا لِوَجْهٍ. لَيْسَ بِوُسْعِنَا ٱلتَّنَعُّمُ بِهٰذَا ٱلْعِيدِ عَلَىٰ هٰذِهِ ٱلْأَرْضِ، وَلٰكِنْ مَا يُمْكِنُنَا ٱلْحُصُولُ عَلَيْهِ هُوَ تَذَوُّقٌ مُسْبَقٌ لِذَاكَ ٱلْعِيدِ، ٱخْتِبَارٌ لِحُضُورِ رُوحِ ٱللّٰهِ مِنْ خِلَالِ ٱلْفَرَحِ ٱلدَّاخِلِيِّ ٱلَّذِي يَهَبُنَا إِيَّاهُ، وَيَنْتُجُ عَنْهُ شُعُورٌ حَمِيمٌ لِلْغَايَةِ. يَجْدُرُ بِنَا ٱلْبَحْثُ ٱلدَّائِمُ عَنْ ٱللّٰهِ، فِي وَقْتِنَا ٱلَّذِي يُمْكِنُنَا دَائِمًا ٱلتَّحَكُّمُ بِهِ، وَٱتِّبَاعُ ٱلشُّعُورِ بِحُضُورِهِ فِي جَمِيعِ أَعْمَالِنَا، وَحَيَاتِنَا، وَإِرَادَتِنَا، وَحُبِّنَا. هَكَذَا، عَلَيْنَا ٱلتَّرَفُّعُ عَنْ أَنْفُسِنَا، عَنْ كُلِّ مَا لَيْسَ هُوَ ٱللّٰه، رَافِضِينَ أَنْ نَبْحَثَ وَنُحِبَّ أَحَدًا غَيْرَهُ بِكُلِّ طَهَارَةٍ. إِنَّ ٱلْوَقْتَ هٰذَا إِنَّمَا هُوَ فِي كُلِّ حِينٍ. ٱلْكُلُّ يَرْغَبُ فِي عَيْشِ فَرَحِ ٱلْحَيَاةِ ٱلْأَبَدِيَّةِ ٱلْحَقِيقِيِّ، فَإِنَّ تِلْكَ ٱلرَّغْبَةَ طَبِيعِيَّةٌ، لِأَنَّ كُلَّ إِنْسَانٍ يَرْغَبُ طَبِيعِيًّا فِي ٱلسَّعَادَةِ. وَلٰكِنَّ ٱلرَّغْبَةَ لَا تَكْفِي. عَلَيْنَا ٱلْبَحْثُ عَنْ ٱللّٰهِ وَٱتِّبَاعُهُ هُوَ. كَثِيرُونَ يُرِيدُونَ ٱلتَّنَعُّمَ بِٱلتَّذَوُّقِ ٱلْمُسْبَقِ لِيَوْمِ ٱلْعِيدِ ٱلْكَبِيرِ ٱلْحَقِيقِيِّ، وَيَتَذَمَّرُونَ مِنْ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يُعْطَ لَهُمْ. يَحْزَنُونَ عِنْدَمَا لَا يَخْتَبِرُونَ ٱلْعِيدَ وَحُضُورَ ٱللّٰهِ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ، فِي صَمِيمِ قُلُوبِهِمْ. فَيُصَلُّونَ أَقَلَّ، وَبِرُوحٍ مُتَذَمِّرَةٍ، قَائِلِينَ إِنَّهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ بِٱللّٰهِ، وَلِهٰذَا ٱلسَّبَبِ تُزْعِجُهُمُ ٱلْأَعْمَالُ وَٱلصَّلَاةُ. هٰذَا مَا يَجِبُ عَلَى ٱلْإِنْسَانِ تَجَنُّبُ فِعْلِهِ. عَلَيْنَا دَوْمًا تَجَنُّبُ ٱلْقِيَامِ بِأَيِّ عَمَلٍ بِغَيْرَةٍ بَارِدَةٍ، لِأَنَّ ٱللّٰهَ حَاضِرٌ دَائِمًا مَعَنَا، حَتَّىٰ وَلَوْ لَمْ نَشْعُرْ بِهِ، فَهُوَ قَدْ صَعِدَ إِلَى ٱلْعِيدِ “خُفْيَةً، لَا عَلانِيَةً”.

Christ our Lord was nailed to the cross to set humankind free from the shipwreck of the world. Moses, in the Old Testament, set up a bronze serpent on a pole in the midst of those who were dying. He had enjoined the people, when they saw this sign, to look at it in order to be healed (Num 21,6f.). So powerful a remedy issued from it against the bite of the serpents that the wounded, looking towards the serpent on the cross, began to hope and at once regained their health. Our Lord did not fail to call this episode to mind in the Gospel when he said: «As Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up» (Jn 3,14)… The serpent, then, is the first to be crucified, by Moses. This is only right as the devil was the first to sin in the sight of the Lord (Gn 3)… It was placed, very rightly, crosswise on a pole since man had been deceived by the subterfuge of the tree of desire and, from henceforth, is saved by a pole cut from another tree… After the serpent, it is man who is crucified in the Savior, not just to punish the guilty party, to be sure, but also to punish the crime. The first cross takes revenge on the serpent, the second on its venom…: the venom that its persuasion had insinuated into man is expelled and healed… This is what our Lord did through his human nature: he, the innocent one, suffers; in him, the disobedience initiated by the devil’s notorious deceit, is put to rights and, set free from his sin, man is set free from death. Since we have as our Lord, Jesus, who has freed us by his Passion, let us keep our eyes constantly fixed on him, let us always hope to find in this sign the remedy for our wounds. If the poison of avarice should spread within us, let us look at the cross and it will deliver us; if that scorpion, desire, should gnaw at us, let us pray earnestly to it and it will heal us; if the bites of our earthly thoughts should tear us, let us pray once more and we shall live. These are our souls’ spiritual serpents: it was to tread them underfoot that our Savior was crucified. He himself says to us: «Behold, I have given you the power to tread on serpents and scorpions… and nothing will harm you» (Lk 10,19).

Let us therefore repent, and pass from ignorance to true knowledge, from foolishness to wisdom, from unrighteousness to righteousness, from godlessness to God. The enjoyment of many other good things comes from this, to which God Himself alludes, speaking by Isaiah: “There is an inheritance for those who serve the Lord” (54,17). Not gold and silver, nor that which moth destroys and thieves steal (Mt 6.19), but the inestimable treasure of salvation… This is the inheritance with which God’s eternal covenant invests us, assuring us of his gifts; and thus our tenderly loving Father ceases not to exhort, to train, to love and to save us. “Become righteous,” says the Lord. “All you who are thirsty, come to the water; and you who have no money, come; buy without money and drink (Is 55,1). He invites us to the purifying bath, to salvation, to illumination… The saints of the Lord shall inherit the glory of God and his power, a glory which “eye has not seen, nor ear heard, and which has not entered the human heart” (1Cor 2,9)… You have this divine promise of grace; you have heard, on the other hand, of the threats of punishment: by these two ways the Lord saves… Why do we delay? Why do we not receive the free gift? Why do we not choose the better part?… “Behold,” he says, “I have set before you death and life.” (Dt 30,15) The Lord tries to make you choose life.” He counsels you like a father… To whom shall the Lord say, “Yours is the kingdom of heaven”? (Mt 5,3) It is yours if you want it, if your choice is set on God. It is yours, if you will only believe and follow the essence of the message, just as the Ninevites obeyed the message of the prophet and obtained a gracious salvation thanks to their sincere repentance, instead of the destruction that threatened them.

لَمْ يَقُلِ ٱلرَّبُّ يَسُوعُ: “حَيْثُ سَوْفَ أَكُونُ أَنَا”، بَلْ: “حَيْثُ أَكُونُ أَنَا”، لِأَنَّ ٱلرَّبَّ يَسُوعَ لَمْ يَتْرُكْ أَبَدًا ٱلْمَكَانَ ٱلَّذِي كَانَ سَيَعُودُ إِلَيْهِ. كَمَا أَنَّهُ عَادَ إِلَيْهِ بِدُونِ أَنْ يَتْرُكَنَا؛ فَبِٱلْفِعْلِ، عَاشَ ٱلرَّبُّ يَسُوعُ بِجَسَدِهِ ٱلْبَشَرِيِّ ٱلْمَنْظُورِ عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ؛ أَمَّا بِعَظَمَتِهِ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَنْظُورَةِ، فَهُوَ كَانَ فِي ٱلْأَرْضِ وَفِي ٱلسَّمَاءِ فِي آنٍ مَعًا. كَمَا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقُلْ: “أَنْتُمْ لَنْ تَسْتَطِيعُوا أَبَدًا أَنْ تَأْتُوا”، بَلْ قَالَ: “لَا تَسْتَطِيعُونَ أَنْتُمْ أَنْ تَأْتُوا”، لِأَنَّ وَضْعَ ٱلتَّلَامِيذِ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِيَسْمَحَ لَهُمْ بِٱللِّحَاقِ بِهِ آنَذَاكَ. وَلِلتَّأْكِيدِ عَلَىٰ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَشَأْ بِكَلَامِهِ هٰذَا أَنْ يُشْعِرَهُمْ بِٱلْيَأْسِ… شَرَحَ ٱلرَّبُّ لِبُطْرُسَ مَعْنَىٰ هٰذَا ٱلْكَلَامِ حِينَ قَالَ: “إِلَىٰ حَيْثُ أَنَا ذَاهِبٌ لَا تَسْتَطِيعُ ٱلْآنَ أَنْ تَتْبَعَنِي، وَلَكِنْ سَتَتْبَعُنِي بَعْدَ حِينٍ” (يو ١٣: ٣٦). هٰذِهِ ٱلْكَلِمَاتُ: “حَيْثُ أَنَا ذَاهِبٌ”، كَانَتْ تَعْنِي حِضْنَ ٱلْآبِ. وَهٰذَا مَا لَمْ يَفْهَمُوهُ عَلَى ٱلْإِطْلَاقِ؛ رَغْمَ ذٰلِكَ، وَبِمُنَاسَبَةِ هٰذَا ٱلْكَلَامِ، سَيُنَبِّئُونَ بِخَلَاصِنَا، مِنْ خِلَالِ ٱلْإِعْلَانِ بِأَنَّ ٱلْمُخَلِّصَ سَيَتَوَجَّهُ إِلَى ٱلْأَبْرَارِ، لَا بِحُضُورِهِ ٱلْجَسَدِيِّ، لَكِنْ بِوَاسِطَةِ قَدَمَيْهِ، لِأَنَّهُ أَرْسَلَ أَعْضَاءَهُ، لِيَضَعَنَا بِمَرْتَبَةِ هٰذِهِ ٱلْأَعْضَاءِ.
