“In the beginning was the Word, the Utterance of God” (cf. Jn 1,1). He is one and the same with him; what he is, he is always; he is without change, he is being. This is the name he made known to his servant Moses: “I am who I am” and “You will say: I AM sent me to you” (Ex 3,14)… Who could understand this? Who could reach him – supposing he were to direct all the powers of his soul as best he may to reaching him who is? I will compare him to an exile who sees his homeland from afar: the sea is separating him from it; he knows where he has to go but has no means of getting there. In the same way we want to reach that final haven which will be our own, where is the One who Is, for he alone is always the same. But the ocean of this world blocks the way… He who calls us came here below to give us the means of getting there. He chose the wood that would enable us to cross the sea: indeed, no one can cross the ocean of this world who is not borne by the cross of Christ. Even the blind can cling to this cross. If you can’t see where you are going very well, don’t let go of it: it will guide you by itself. So then, brethren, this is what I should like to impress on your hearts: if you want to live in a spirit of devotion, a christian spirit, cling to Christ just as he became for us so as to rejoin him as he is now and as he has always been. This is why he came down to us, for he became man that he might take up the weak, enabling them to cross the sea and disembark into the homeland where a ship is no longer needed because there is no more ocean to cross. In all events, it would be better for one’s soul not to see him who is and to embrace Christ’s cross than to see him spiritually but despise the cross. So, for our own happiness, may we both see where we are going and cling to the ship that is taking us there…! Some have succeeded and have seen what he is. It was because he had seen him that John said: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” They saw him and, to attain what they saw from afar, they clung to the cross of Christ. They did not despise the humility of Christ.

Oh Amor, que retienes a mi Jesús, mi dulce salud, tan fuertemente unido a la cruz, que expira bajo tu mano, se muere de amor. Amor, ¿qué estás haciendo? Tú no te ahorras nada ni te das descanso hasta que hayas rescatado a todos los malhechores. Tú no pones medida al amor… Amor, tu experiencia ha tocado el corazón de mi Jesús con tanta fuerza que, roto por el amor, este corazón se ha estrujado. Amor, hete aquí feliz, de aquí en adelante satisfecho, porque mi Jesús se suspende muerto ante sus ojos: muerto, verdaderamente muerto, a fin de que yo tenga la vida en abundancia; muerto, para que el Padre que me adopte como hijo muy amado, muerto a fin de que yo viva más feliz… Oh muerte que das tantos frutos, de gracia, que bajo tu protección, mi muerte es tranquila y sin temor. Muerte de Cristo que traes la vida, la gracia, me refugio a la sombra de tus alas (Sal 35,8). Muerte de donde brota la vida, haz que una suave chispa de tu amor vivificante arda en mí para siempre. Muerte gloriosa, muerte fructífera, muerte en suma de mi salvación, amistoso contrato de mi rescate, pacto firme de mi reconciliación, muerte triunfante, dulce y llena de vida, en ti brilla para mí con una caridad tal que ni en el cielo y ni en la tierra hemos encontrado otra comparable. Oh muerte de Cristo, que amo de todo corazón, tu eres la confianza espiritual de mi corazón. Muerte amante, en ti se contienen para mi todos los bienes. Tómame, por favor, bajo tu benevolente protección, a fin que en mi muerte repose dulcemente bajo tu sombra (Ct 2,3). Muerte misericordiosa tu eres mi vida feliz. Tú eres mi mayor suerte (Sal 15,5). Tú, tu eres mi sobreabundante salvación. Tú eres mi más preciosa heredad.

It is you, O Love, O divine self-oblation, who hold my Jesus fastened to the cross, and under your hand he bows his sacred head and dies for very love. But what do you do, O heavenly spirit of self-oblation? And to whom do you turn for aid? You know no rest until you have succoured us in our misery. The love from which you spring is boundless, everlasting (…). O Love, you fasten yourself on the heart of my Jesus, so that in his loving surrender of himself for us, it is all pierced through and torn. O Love, it is enough. Do you not see that my Jesus, nailed to the cross, has given up his spirit? Life has forsaken his most blessed body. He is dead, truly dead, that I might have abundant life. He is dead, that the Father might adopt me as his beloved daughter. He is dead, to open to me the gates of everlasting life (…). O death, you bring forth fruit of life eternal; O mighty death, render mine calm and sure. You, O death, are life eternal; beneath your solemn shadow I dare to hope (cf. Ps 36[35]:8). O death, bestow on me one feeble spark of eternal life, and let it burn in me for ever. O glorious and most fruitful death, death on which hangs all my salvation: you are the sure covenant of love whereby I have been redeemed, the inviolable pledge of my reconciliation to God. O triumphant death, from you there shines forth a love incomparable in earth or heaven. O death, you work of goodness, you are a source of sweet trust to my heart. O death, lavishing on us all your love, you contain everything that is good. Be my guardian that my own death may be to dwell sweetly beneath your shade (cf. Sg 2:3). O merciful death, you are my blessedness, my allotted portion (Ps 16[15]:5), my redemption and rich inheritance.

La santa eucaristía, sacramento del amor, es el don que Jesús hace de sí mismo revelándonos así el amor infinito de Dios por todo hombre. En este admirable sacramento se manifiesta el amor «más grande», el que empuja a «dar su vida por sus amigos» (Jn 15,13). En efecto, Jesús «los amó hasta el extremo». Con esta expresión el evangelista introduce el gesto de humildad llevado a cabo por Jesús: antes de morir en la cruz por nosotros, se ciñó un lienzo en la cintura y lavó los pies a sus discípulos. De la misma manera Jesús continúa amándonos «hasta el extremo», hasta el don de su cuerpo y sangre en la eucaristía. ¡Cómo debió quedar asombrado el corazón de los discípulos ante los gestos y las palabras de Jesús durante la Cena! ¡Qué asombro debe suscitar también en nuestro corazón el misterio eucarístico!… En efecto, en este sacramento el Señor se hace comida para el hombre sediento de verdad y de libertad. Puesto que tan sólo la verdad puede hacernos libres (Jn 8,36), Cristo se hace para nosotros alimento de Verdad… Porque todo hombre lleva en sí mismo el deseo inextinguible de la verdad última y definitiva. Por eso el Señor Jesús «el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida» (Jn 14,6) se dirige al corazón deseoso del hombre que se experimenta peregrino y sediento, al corazón que aspira ardientemente a la fuente de la vida, al corazón buscador de verdad. En efecto, Jesucristo es la verdad hecha persona, que atrae al mundo hacia él… En el sacramento de la eucaristía Jesús nos enseña sobre todo la verdad del amor, que es la esencia misma de Dios, esta verdad evangélica que interesa a todo hombre y a todo el hombre. Por consiguiente, la Iglesia, que encuentra en la eucaristía su centro vital, se compromete sin cesar a anunciar a todos «a tiempo y a destiempo» (2Tm 4,2), que Dios es amor. Es precisamente porque Cristo por nosotros se ha hecho alimento de la verdad que la Iglesia se dirige al hombre invitándolo a acoger libremente el don de Dios.

يبرهن المُحِبّون في هذا العالم عن كَرَمِهم من خلال تقديم الأموال والثياب والهدايا المتنوّعة؛ غير أنّه ما من أحد يعطي دمه. أمّا الرّب يسوع فقد أعطاه، وهو بذلك برهن عن حنانه تجاهنا وحرارة محبّته لنا. بحسب الشريعة القديمة،… كان الله يقبل دم الذبائح، إنّما فعل ذلك ليمنع شعبه من تقديمه للأوثان، وفي ذلك، بحدّ ذاته، برهان لحبّه الكبير. لكنّ الرّبّ يسوع المسيح كان قد بدّل هذه الشعائر… فالضحيّة ما عادت هي نفسها، لأنّه قدّم نفسه ذبيحةً. ” أَلَيسَ الخُبْزُ الَّذي نَكسِرُه مُشارَكَةً في جَسَدِ المسيح؟” (1كور 10: 16)… ما هو هذا الخبز؟ إنّه جسد الرّب يسوع. ماذا يصبح مَن يتناول منه؟ يصبحون جسد المسيح: ليس أجسادًا كثيرة، إنّما جسدٌ واحد. وكما أنّ الخبز المؤلّف من حبّات القمح الكثيرة هو خبز واحد فيه تلاحمت الحبّات، وكما أنّ الحبّات ما زالت موجودة، ولكنّه يستحيل عزلها عن ذاك الجمهور الشديد الترابط، هكذا نحن جميعًا مع بعضنا بعضًا ومع الرّب يسوع نصبح وحدةً متكاملةً… والآن إن كُنّا نتشارك كلّنا بالخبز الواحد، وإن كنّا بأجمعنا متّحدين بالرّب يسوع المسيح الواحد نفسه، لمَ لا نظهر هذا الحبّ نفسه؟ ولمَ لا نصبح واحدًا في هذا أيضًا؟ هذا ما كان ظاهرًا في البدايات: “وكانَ جَماعَةُ الَّذينَ آمَنوا قَلبًا واحِدًا ونَفْساً واحِدة، لا يَقولُ أَحدٌ مِنهم إِنَّه يَملِكُ شَيئًا مِن أَموالِه، بل كانَ كُلُّ شَيءٍ مُشتَرَكًا بَينَهم” (أع 4: 32)… إن الرّب يسوع المسيح قد جاء ليبحث عنك، أنت يا من كان بعيدًا عنه، وهو يريد أن يتّحد بك، وأنت، ألا تريد أن تتّحد مع أخيك؟… تنفصل عنه بشدّة، بعد أن حصلت من الربّ البرهان عن حبّه العظيم! في الواقع، فهو لم يعطِنا جسده وحسب؛ بل بما أنّ جسدنا المأخوذ من التراب كان قد فقد الحياة ومات بسبب الخطيئة، أدخل إليه مادّةً جديدةً كأنّها خميرة، إن جاز التعبير. وهذه المادّة هي جسده الخاصّ، الّذي هو من طبيعة جسدنا، ولكنه منزّه عن الخطأ ومملوء حياة. ولقد أعطاه إلينا أجمعين، حتّى إذا تغذّينا من هذه المائدة بالجسد الجديد… يمكننا أن ندخل الحياة غير المائتة.

We are soon going to share in the Passover, and although we still do so only in a symbolic way, the symbolism already has more clarity than it possessed in former times because, under the law, the Passover was, if I may dare to say so, only a symbol of a symbol. Before long, however, when the Word “drinks the new wine with us in the kingdom of his Father” (Lk 22:18), we shall be keeping the Passover in a yet more perfect way, and with deeper understanding… So let us take our part in the Passover prescribed by the law, not in a literal way (Rom 7:6), but according to the teaching of the Gospel; not in an imperfect way, but perfectly; not only for a time, but eternally. Let us regard as our home the heavenly Jerusalem, not the earthly one; the city glorified by angels, not the one laid waste by armies. We are not required to sacrifice “young bulls or rams, beasts with horns and hoofs” (Ps 69:32)…; but instead, let us join the choirs of angels in offering God upon his heavenly altar a sacrifice of praise (Ps 49:14). We must now pass through the first veil and approach the second, turning our eyes toward the Holy of Holies. I will say more: we must sacrifice ourselves to God, each day and in everything we do, accepting all that happens to us for the sake of the Word, imitating his passion by our sufferings, and honouring his blood by shedding our own. We must be ready to be crucified. If you are a Simon of Cyrene, take up your cross and follow Christ. If you are crucified beside him like one of the thieves, now, like the good thief, acknowledge your God… If you are a Joseph of Arimathea, go to the one who ordered his crucifixion, and ask for Christ’s body. Make your own the expiation for the sins of the whole world. If you are a Nicodemus, like the man who worshipped God by night, bring spices and prepare Christ’s body for burial. If you are one of the Marys, or Salome, or Joanna, weep in the early morning. Be the first to see the stone rolled back, and even the angels perhaps, and Jesus himself. (Lk 23:26,42,52; Jn 19:39; Mk 16:1; Lk 24:10; Jn 20,1f.)

The sacrament of charity, the Holy Eucharist is the gift that Jesus Christ makes of himself, thus revealing to us God’s infinite love for every man and woman. This wondrous sacrament makes manifest that “greater” love which led him to “lay down his life for his friends” (Jn 15:13). Jesus did indeed love them “to the end” (Jn 13:1). In those words the Evangelist introduces Christ’s act of immense humility: before dying for us on the Cross, he tied a towel around himself and washed the feet of his disciples. In the same way, Jesus continues, in the sacrament of the Eucharist, to love us “to the end,” even to offering us his body and his blood. What amazement must the Apostles have felt in witnessing what the Lord did and said during that Supper! What wonder must the eucharistic mystery also awaken in our own hearts! (…) In this sacrament, the Lord truly becomes food for us, to satisfy our hunger for truth and freedom. Since only the truth can make us free (cf. Jn 8:32), Christ becomes for us the food of truth (…) Each of us has an innate and irrepressible desire for ultimate and definitive truth. The Lord Jesus, “the way, and the truth, and the life” (Jn 14:6), speaks to our thirsting, pilgrim hearts, our hearts yearning for the source of life, our hearts longing for truth. Jesus Christ is the Truth in person, drawing the world to himself (…) In the sacrament of the Eucharist, Jesus shows us in particular the truth about the love which is the very essence of God. It is this evangelical truth which challenges each of us and our whole being. For this reason, the Church, which finds in the Eucharist the very centre of her life, is constantly concerned to proclaim to all, opportune importune (cf. 2 Tim 4:2), that God is love. Precisely because Christ has become for us the food of truth, the Church turns to every man and woman, inviting them freely to accept God’s gift.

    Vamos a participar en la Pascua, ahora aún de manera figurada, aunque ya más clara que en la antigua ley, si puedo decirlo así, como una figura oscura de nuestra Pascua, que es también figura… Nosotros hemos de tomar parte en esta fiesta ritual de la Pascua en un sentido evangélico, y no literal; de manera perfecta, no imperfecta; no de forma temporal, sino eterna. Tomemos como nuestra capital, no la Jerusalén terrean, sino la ciudad celeste; no aquella que ahora pisan los ejércitos, sino la que resuena con las alabanzas de los ángeles. Sacrifiquemos no jóvenes terneros ni corderos con cuernos y pezuñas (sl 68,32), más muertos que vivos y desprovistos de inteligencia, sino más bien ofrezcamos a Dios un sacrificio de alabanza (Sal 49,14) sobre el altar del cielo, unidos a los coros celestiales. Atravesemos la primera cortina, avancemos hasta la segunda y dirijamos nuestras miradas al Santo de los santos. Yo diría aún más: inmolémonos nosotros mismos a Dios, ofrezcámosle todos los días nuestro ser con todas nuestras acciones. Estemos dispuestos a todo por causa del Verbo; imitemos su pasión con nuestros padecimientos, honremos su sangre con nuestra sangre, subamos decididamente a su cruz: sus clavos son dulces a pesar de ser extremadamente dolorosos. Es mejor sufrir con Cristo y por Cristo que vivir deliciosamente con los otros. Si eres Simón de Cirene, toma tu cruz y sigue a Cristo. Si estás crucificado con él como un ladrón, haz como el buen ladrón: reconoce a Dios… Si eres José de Arimatea, reclama el cuerpo del Señor a quien lo crucificó, y haz tuya la expiación del mundo. Si eres Nicodemo, el que de noche adoraba a Dios, ven a enterrar el cuerpo, y úngelo con ungüento y perfúmalo con la mirra. Si eres una de las dos Marías, o Salomé o Juana, llora desde el amanecer; procura ser el primero en ver la piedra quitada, y verás quizá a los ángeles o incluso al mismo Jesús.

Saint Paul states: «In these, the last days, God has spoken to us in his Son, whom he has established heir of all things» (Heb 1,2). Now, doesn’t this sentence mean that the Father considered everyone to form a part of Christ’s inheritance? It matches the prophecy of David: «Ask and I shall give you the nations as your heritage, that you may have dominion to the ends of the earth» (Ps 2,8). Our Lord himself declares: «I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw everyone to myself» (Jn 12,32). Does it not appear that the salvation of every person is promised? Elsewhere we find a prophecy about the Church: «Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be laid low, the rugged places shall become a plain and the highland a broad valley» (Is 40,4). Does it seem as though anyone has been forgotten or has not been chosen here as one of Christ’s subjects? And what should we think when we read: «All flesh shall come and bow low before me; they will worship me in Jerusalem, says the Lord» (cf. Is 66,23)… Therefore the term «people of God» is to be understood in all its fullness. No matter if the majority of people refuse or neglect the Savior’s grace, it is the whole that is indicated by the words «elect» and «predestined»… The apostle Paul also says: «We proclaim a crucified Jesus Christ, a stumbling block to Jews and folly for pagans… but the power and wisdom of God» (1Cor 1,23-24). Would Christ be «the power» and «wisdom of God» in the eyes of the same people for whom he is «a stumbling block» and «folly»? In fact, since certain people are saved because of their faith while others are hardened in their unbelief, the apostle included both faithful and unfaithful under the general title of «chosen». Thus he showed that those whom he counted as pagans had become strangers to God’s call even though they had heard the Gospel.

يا ربّ، كلّ ما تعلّمنا إيّاه قد يبدو لنا بغاية الصعوبة لو كنت تُحدّثنا من منبر آخر؛ إنّما لأنّك تعلّمنا عبر المثل الحيّ أكثر منه عبر الكلام، أنت “الرَّبُّ والمُعَلِّمُ” (يو 13: 14)، فكيف نجرؤ إذًا على قول العكس نحن الخدّام والتلاميذ؟ ما تقوله أنت صحيح للغاية، وما تأمر به حقّ للغاية؛ وذاك الصليب يؤكّد على ذلك. كما يشهد على ذلك أيضًا ذاك الدم الغزير المتدفّق من جنبك الطاهر؛ فهو يصرخ بكامل قواه (راجع تك 4: 10). وأخيرًا، ذاك الموت بحدّ ذاته: ذاك الموت الذي شقّ حجاب الهيكل عن بعد وأذاب الحجارة القاسية (راجع مت 27: 51)، كيف لا يكون له التأثير نفسه على قلوب المؤمنين؛ وكيف له ألاّ يقودهم إلى الطاعة؟ يا ربّ، نريد أن نقدّم لك حبّنا حُبًّا بك؛ وإن كانت رغبة اتّباعك لا تنبع بعد من حبّنا لك إذ إنّه لا يزال ضعيفًا، ليكن على الأقلّ نابعًا من حبّنا لحبّك. إن كنت تجذبنا إليك، “فإنَّنَا نَجْرِي خَلْفَ أرِيجِ عُطُورِكَ” (نش 1: 4 – الترجمة السّبعينيّة): فنحن لا نرغب فقط في حبّك وفي اتّباعك، لكنّنا مصمّمون على احتقار هذا العالم… عندما نلحظ أنّك أنت، قائدنا، لم تستأثر بأفراح هذه الحياة. لقد رأيناك تواجه الموت، لا على فِراشٍ، بل مُعَلّقًا على خشبة العار؛ وعلى الرغم من أنّك ملك، لم تبحث عن عرش آخر إلاّ هذا الصليب… مدفوعين بمثالك كملك ممتلئ بالحكمة، نحن نرفض نداء هذا العالم وترفه، وحاملين صليبك على أكتافنا، نحن نقترح على أنفسنا أن نتبعك أنت وحدك… امنحنا فقط المساعدة اللازمة؛ اجعلنا أقوياء بما فيه الكفاية كي نتبعك.
