     Addressing Joseph through the words of the angel, God speaks to him as the husband of the Virgin of Nazareth. What took place in her through the power of the Holy Spirit also confirmed in a special way the marriage bond which already existed between Joseph and Mary. God’s messenger was clear in what he said to Joseph: “Do not fear to take Mary your wife into your home.” Hence, what had taken place earlier, namely, Joseph’s marriage to Mary, happened in accord with God’s will and was meant to endure. In her divine motherhood Mary had to continue to live as “a virgin, the wife of her husband” (cf. Lk 1:27).      In the words of the “annunciation” by night, Joseph not only heard the divine truth concerning his wife’s indescribable vocation; he also heard once again the truth about his own vocation. This “just” man, who, in the spirit of the noblest traditions of the Chosen People, loved the Virgin of Nazareth and was bound to her by a husband’s love, was once again called by God to this love.      “Joseph did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife” into his home (Mt 1:24); what was conceived in Mary was “of the Holy Spirit.” From expressions such as these are we not to suppose that his love as a man was also given new birth by the Holy Spirit? Are we not to think that the love of God which has been poured forth into the human heart through the Holy Spirit (cf. Rm 5:5) molds every human love to perfection? This love of God also molds-in a completely unique way-the love of husband and wife, deepening within it everything of human worth and beauty, everything that bespeaks an exclusive gift of self, a covenant between persons, and an authentic communion according to the model of the Blessed Trinity.

في بداية طريق الإيمان، التقى إيمان مريم بإيمان يوسف. يمكننا أن ننسب ما قالته إليصابات بابتهاج لأمّ المخلّص: “فَطوبى لِمَن آمَنَت” (لو 1: 45)، بشكلٍ ما إلى القدّيس يوسف، لأنّه أجاب بطريقة إيجابيّة على “كلمة الله” عندما أُعلنت له في مرحلة حاسمة. صحيح أنّ القدّيس يوسف لم يُجِب الملاك بنفس طريقة مريم، غير أنّه “فَعَلَ كَمَا أَمَرَهُ مَلاكُ الرَّبِّ وأَخَذَ ٱمْرَأَتَهُ”. وما فعله القدّيس يوسف يقع في خانة “طاعَةِ الإِيمانِ” (راجع رو 1: 5) بالكامل. يمكننا إذًا القول إنّ ما قام به القدّيس يوسف يوحّده بشكلٍ مميّزٍ جدًّا مع إيمان مريم؛ فقد تقبّل كحقيقة آتية من الله ما تقبّلته مريم سابقًا خلال البشارة. قال المجمع الفاتيكاني الثاني: “إنَّ طاعةَ الإيمان أمرٌ واجبٌ لله الموحي، وبهذه الطاعةِ يُفوِّضُ الإنسان أمرَه إلى تدبيرِ الله بكامِلِ حرِّيتِهِ، فيُخضِعُ لهُ تماماً عقلَه وإرادتَه، ويَقبَلُ، عن رضى، الحقائقَ التي يَكشفُها له (كلمة الله [Dei Verbum]، دستور عقائدي في “الوحي الإلهي”، العدد 5). هذه العبارة التي تمسّ جوهر الإيمان، تنطبق تمامًا على القديس يوسف الناصري. لقد أصبح يوسف، وبشكلٍ استثنائي، حاملاً للسرّ “الذي ظَلَّ مَكتومًا طَوالَ الدُّهورِ في اللهِ” (أف 3: 9)، تمامًا مثل مريم في ذلك الوقت المصيري الذي سمّاه القدّيس بولس “ملء الزمان”، عندما “أَرسَلَ اللهُ ابنَه مَولودًا لامرَأَةٍ ، لِيَفتَدِيَ الذينَ هم في حُكْمِ الشَّريعة، فنَحْظى بِالتَّبَنِّي” (غل 4: 4–5)… هكذا يكون يوسف، مع مريم، المؤتمن الأوّل على هذا السرّ الإلهي… وعندما نعود إلى إنجيلَيّ متّى ولوقا، يمكننا أن نُعلن أيضًا أنّ يوسف كان أوّل مَن شارك في إيمان أمّ الله، وساند بالتالي خطيبته من خلال إيمانه بالبشارة الإلهيّة؛ لقد وضعه الله كأوّل شخصٍ على طريق حجّ إيمان مريم… سينتهي الطريق الخاصّ بيوسف، أي حجّ إيمانه أوّلاً…؛ إلاّ إنّ طريق إيمان يوسف سلك الاتّجاه نفسه.

There is no doubt that Joseph was a very holy and trustworthy man, since the Mother of the Savior was to be his wife. He was the “faithful and prudent servant” (Mt 24:45), for God established him to be his Mother’s support, the foster father of his flesh, and the assistant for his plan of salvation. We must recall that he was of the house of David. He was son of David not only by bonds of the flesh but even more because of his faith, holiness and piety. God found in him a second David to whom he could confidently entrust his plans, even the most hidden. He revealed to him, as to another David, the mysteries of his wisdom and disclosed to him what no teacher in the world could know. He allowed him to see and listen to things that so many kings and prophets had wished to see and hear but which, in spite of their desire, they had not been able to see or to hear (Mt 13:7); even more, he made him carry and guide, embrace, nurture and protect him. Both Mary and Joseph belonged to David’s race; in Mary was fulfilled the promise once made by the Lord to David, while Joseph was the witness of this fulfilment.

إنّنا جميعًا نتطلّع إلى تحقيق السعادة والعيش بسلام. وقد خُلِقنا جميعًا لهذه الغاية ولا يمكننا أن نجد السعادة أو السلام إلاّ من خلال محبّة الله: إنّ محبّة الله تمنحنا السعادة والبهجة، ويعتقد الكثيرون، خاصّة في الغرب، أنّ العيش برفاهية يمنح السعادة. لكنّني أظنّ أنّه من الأصعب تحقيق السعادة مع الثراء حيث أنّ هموم كسب المال والحفاظ عليه يخفي الله عن أنظارنا. لكن، إذا ائتَمنَنا الله على الثروات، يجب أن نخصِّصَها لخدمة أعماله: مساعدة الآخرين، ومساعدة الفقراء، واستحداث الوظائف وإعطاء العمل للآخرين. فلا تُبعثِروا ثروتكم عبثًا؛ إنّ الحصول على المنزل، والتشريفات، والحريّة والصحّة، جميعها ثروات ائتَمنَنا عليها الربّ لنضعَها في خدمة الأقلّ حظًّا منّا. قالَ الرّب يسوع المسيح: “كُلّما صَنعتُم شَيئًا مِن ذلك لِواحِدٍ مِن إخوتي هؤلاءِ الصِّغار، فَلي قد صَنَعتُموه” (مت 25: 40). وبالتالي، فإنّ الأمر الوحيد الذي يمكن أن يجعلني حزينة هو إهانة الربّ بسبب أنانيّتي أو لتمنّعي عن مساعدة الآخرين أو بسبب الإساءة إلى أحد. إنّنا إذ نؤذي الفقراء من خلال إيذاء بعضنا البعض، إنّما نؤذي الربّ. “الرَّبُّ أعْطَى والرَّبُّ أخَذَ” (أي 1: 21)؛ فتَشاركوا ما أُعطيتُم، بما في ذلك حياتكم.

“Mi amado es un racimo de uvas de Chipre, en la viña de En-Gaddi” … Este racimo divino se cubre de flores antes de su Pasión y derrama su vino en la Pasión… Sobre la vid, el racimo no presenta siempre la misma forma, cambia según el tiempo: florece, aumenta de volumen, crece, y cuando está completamente maduro, se transforma en vino. La vid promete por su fruto: no está todavía madura para poder dar vino, pero espera que llegue el tiempo de su plenitud. Sin embargo, no es del todo incapaz de alegrarnos. En efecto, antes del gusto, nos goza con su aroma esperando los bienes que dará, y seduce el sentido del alma con los perfumes de la esperanza. Porque la firme certeza de la gracia esperada es ya gozo para los que esperan con constancia. Es asimismo para la uva de Chipre, pues promete dar buen vino ya antes de serlo: a través de su flor –su flor es la esperanza- nos asegura la gracia futura…     Aquel cuya voluntad coincide con la del Señor, porque “la medita día y noche”, llega a ser “un árbol plantado junto a la corriente que da fruto en su sazón y su hoja no se marchita” (Sl 1, 1-3). Por eso la viña del Esposo que ha dado su fruto en la tierra fértil de Gaddi, es decir, en el fondo del alma, que es regada y enriquecida por las enseñanzas divinas, produce este racimo florido y desarrollado en el cual puede contemplar a su propio jardinero y a su viñador. ¡Dichosa esa tierra cultivada cuya flor reproduce la belleza del Esposo! Puesto que éste es la luz verdadera, el verdadero camino y la verdadera justicia… y muchas otras virtudes, si alguien, por sus obras, llega a ser semejante al Esposo cuando mira al racimo de su propia conciencia y ve en ella al mismo Esposo, porque refleja la luz de la verdad en una vida luminosa y sin mancha. Por eso esta viña fecunda dice: “Mi racimo florece y brota” (cf Ct 7,13). El mismo Esposo en persona es este verdadero racimo que se presenta atado al madero, del que la sangre sale como verdadera bebida de salvación para los que se gozan en su salvación.

“My bridegroom to me is a cluster of grapes from Cyprus, in the vineyard of Engedi” (Sg 1:14) (…) This divine cluster is covered with flowers before the Passion and pours out its wine in the Passion (…) He is like a cluster of grapes hanging on a vine, which does not always look the same but changes its appearance with the season as blossom turns to fully formed fruit and then to the ripe fruit which eventually is made into wine. Its fruit gives promise to the vine even before that fruit is ripe enough for wine, and while still awaiting harvest time it does not lack the capacity to please. Its scent gives pleasure if its taste does not, for scent holds the expectation of future enjoyment. The breath of hope delights the senses of the soul, since the certainty of enjoying what is hoped for gives pleasure! those who patiently await that enjoyment. This then is what the grapes of Cyprus stand for, which even before becoming wine hold the promise of wine, and by their blossom, since blossom is hope, give assurance of future enjoyment (…). Anyone whose will is in harmony with the law of God and who “meditates on it day and night is like an tree planted by running water, which yields its fruit in due season and whose leaves will never wither” (Ps 1:1-3). So it was that the vine of the bridegroom in Engedi, rooted in fertile ground, that is to say, in profound meditation nourished by the divine teachings, produced this flowering and ripening bunch of grapes in which it beholds its own vinedresser. Blessed that husbandry whose fruit takes on the appearance of the bridegroom! Since he (…) is true light, true life, true righteousness and every similar perfection, when anyone by his deeds becomes what he is, that person, beholding the cluster of grapes which is his own conscience sees therein the bridegroom himself, for in his own radiantly pure life he sees as in a mirror the light of truth. Hence this fruitful vine says: “My vines are in bloom, the buds have opened” (cf. Sg 7:13). The bridegroom is this true cluster of grapes in person, showing himself attached to the wood and whose blood becomes a saving drink for those who rejoice in their salvation.

Consider, O man, the one who has lavished his gifts on you. Reflect on yourself. Call to mind who you are, what business you carry out, who has entrusted it to you, why it is that you have been chosen rather than many others. You are the good God’s servant; you are responsible for your serving companions. Don’t imagine that all these benefits are intended for your own stomach. Arrange the good things you have in your hands as though they belonged to someone else; they will give you pleasure for a certain amount of time, then vanish away and disappear. But a detailed account will be asked of you… “What am I to do?” The answer was a simple one: “I will satisfy the hungry; I will open my barns and invite the poor… All you who lack bread, come to me. Let each one take a sufficient share of the gifts God has granted me. Come and draw water as though at the public well.”

La felicidad de la otra vida es el cumplimiento de todos los deseos. La felicidad de esta vida es el anonadamiento de todos los deseos. (…) Los deseos crecen a medida que obtenemos lo que hemos deseado. La posesión de lo que hemos deseado alimenta nuestros deseos, sin saciar el alma. Seducida para los sentidos y las falsas opiniones de los hombres, el alma desea que esta carga la satisfaga. Pero viendo que sólo es como una gota de agua en un abismo, va hacia otros objetos que los sentidos le representan como bienes capaces de llenarla. El mal rico sólo pedía una gota de agua, era todo su deseo. Los dejo pensar, si creen que así hubiera calmado su sed. Si dudas, no. Si tuviéramos la realización de todos nuestros deseos en esta vida, no pensaríamos más en la otra. Por eso Dios, que nos ama, dispone la situación de otra forma. (…) ¿Llegamos a la verdadera felicidad en este mundo? Los placeres del mundo que sacian al principio, sus honores, gloria y riquezas, al final no sacian. Todos esos falsos bienes que a veces desagradan y otras veces dan hambre, pasarán como humo. El recurso a ellos es siempre turbado por una mezcla de males infinitos y por la imagen terrible de la muerte, en la que terminan. Ellos no pueden dar la verdadera felicidad.

قالَ ربّنا ومخلّصنا يسوع المسيح: “لمَلكُوتُ اللهِ لا يَأْتِي بِالمُرَاقَبَة. وَلَنْ يُقال: هَا هُوَ هُنا، أَوْ هُنَاك! فَهَا إِنَّ مَلَكُوتَ اللهِ في دَاخِلِكُم!”. في الحقيقة، إنّ “الكَلِمَة قَريبَةٌ مِنكَ جِدًّا، في فَمِكَ وفي قَلبِكَ لتعمَلَ بِها” (تث 30: 14). في هذه الحالة، من المؤكّد أنّ مَن يصلّي ليأتي ملكوت الله هو محقٌّ في صلاتِه كي يظهرَ ذاك الملكوت، ويحملَ الثمار ويتحقّقَ فيه. يسكن الله عند كلّ القدّيسين الذين يملكُ عليهم والذين يطيعونَ شريعته الروحيّة، كما في مدينة فائقة التنظيم. الآب حاضرٌ فيه والرّب يسوع يملكُ مع الآب في هذه النفس الكاملة، وفقًا لكلامه: “نأتي إِلَيه فنَجعَلُ لَنا عِندَه مُقامًا” (يو 14: 23). إنّ ملكوت الله الحاضر فينا، بينما نستمرّ في التقدّم، سيبلغُ كمالَه حين يتحقّق كلام الرسول بولس: “بعد أن أخضعَ المسيحُ كلَّ شيءٍ تحتَ قَدَمَيه”، “سيَخضَعُ الابنُ نفسُه لذاكَ الذي أخضَعَ له كلَّ شيء، ليكونَ اللهُ كلَّ شيء في كلِّ شيء” (1كور 15: 28). لذا، حين نصلّي بلا كلل، باستعدادات مُمجَّدة من الكلمة، فَلنَقلْ: “أبانا الذي في السّموات، لِيُقدَّس اسمُكَ، لِيَأتِ مَلَكوتُكَ” (مت 6: 9).

“The bridegroom is coming” (Mt 25,6). Christ our Bridegroom speaks this word in Latin: “venit”. This word could be in either the present or the perfect tense and so contains within itself two different times: the time which is past and that which is present. In addition, Christ means the time which is still to come. For this reason we shall have· to consider three comings of our Bridegroom Jesus Christ. In the first of these comings he became a human being out of love for us. The second coming takes place daily in many and various ways in every loving heart, for he comes with new gifts and new graces according to the measure in which each person is able to receive them. The third coming is that on the Day of Judgment or at the hour of death… The reason God created angels and human beings was his fathomless goodness and nobility. He wished the blessedness and richness that he is in himself to be revealed to rational creatures so that they might savor him in this temporal world and enjoy him beyond the temporal order in eternity. The reason God became a human being was his incomprehensible love and the need of all persons, for they had been corrupted through original sin and could do nothing of themselves to change their condition. But there were four reasons why Christ, according to both his divinity and his humanity, performed all his works on earth: first, his divine love, which is immeasurable; secondly, that created love which is called charity and which he had in his soul through his union with the eternal Word and through the perfect gifts which he received from his Father; thirdly, the great need of human nature; and fourthly, the honor of his Father. These are the reason for the coming of Christ our Bridegroom and for all that he did.
