To reverence and honor him whom we believe to be Word, Savior, and Leader, and by him, the Father, not on special days, as some others do, but doing this continually throughout our whole life and in every way: this is our duty. The chosen people cries out: “Seven times a day have I praised you” (Ps 118[119],164). Whence not in a specified place, or selected temple, or at certain festivals and on appointed days, but during his whole life and in every place, the truly spiritual person… honors God, that is, acknowledges his gratitude for the knowledge of the way to live. And if the presence of someone good, through the respect and reverence which they inspire, always improves those with whom they associate, with much more reason do not they who always hold uninterrupted converse with God by their knowledge, life, and thanksgiving not improve at every step in everything: conduct, words, disposition?… Holding festival, then, in our whole life, persuaded that God is wholly present everywhere, we cultivate our fields, singing; we sail the sea to the sound of hymns and, in all our other conversation we conduct ourselves like “citizens of heaven” (Phil 3:20)… Prayer is, then, to speak more boldly, intimate converse with God. Even if we whisper softly and, not opening the lips, speak in silence, yet we cry inwardly. For God constantly hears our interior voice… Indeed, the genuinely spiritual person prays throughout his whole life, endeavoring by prayer to have fellowship with God. And he leaves behind him all that is of no service, as having now received the perfection of one who acts by love… His whole life is a sacred liturgy.

El que camina bajo la conducción del Espíritu no permanece constantemente en el mismo estado y no progresa siempre con el mismo paso. El camino hombre no pertenece a él mismo, sino que depende de la iniciativa del Espíritu, su maestro. Él le otorga de olvidar lo que está detrás e ir hacia adelante, a veces lentamente, a veces con mayor impulso. Pienso que si prestas atención, tu experiencia interior confirmará lo que acabo de expresar. Si te sientes aletargado, por la pena o el disgusto, no pierdas confianza ni abandones tu proyecto de vida espiritual. Busca más bien la mano del que es tu auxilio. Implórale de entrenarte en su seguimiento (cf. Ct 1,4) hasta que atraído por la gracia reencuentres el dinamismo y la alegría de la marcha. Entonces podrás decir “Correré por el camino de tus mandamientos, porque tú me infundes ánimo” (Sal 119,32). (…) Cuando te sientas colmado, no digas “Nada me hará vacilar”, para no tener que decir gimiente lo que sigue del Salmo “Pero apenas ocultaste tu rostro, quedé conturbado” (Sal 29, 7-8). Si eres sabio, tendrás cuidado de seguir el consejo de la Sabiduría. El día de infortunio, no olvidarás la felicidad y en la consolación no olvidarás los momentos de infortunio (cf. Si 11,27). (…) Así la esperanza no te faltará en tiempos de penas, ni la previsión en días de felicidad. En medio de triunfos o de fracasos de estos tiempos inestables, guardarás, como imagen de eternidad, una sólida estabilidad de alma. Bendecirás al Señor en todo tiempo y así, en el seno de un mundo vacilante, encontrarás la paz, una paz inquebrantable. Comenzarás a renovarte y transformarte a imagen y semejanza de un Dios de serenidad eterna.

يجب أن يمثّل كلّ قلب مسيحيّ صورة مصغّرة عن الكنيسة الكاثوليكيّة، لأنّ الرُّوح نفسه هو الذي يجعل الكنيسة كلّها وكلّ عضو فيها “هَيكَل الله” (1كور 3: 16). وكما وحّد الكنيسة التي قد تنقسم إلى عدّة كنائس إن تُركت لوحدها، هكذا وحّد النفس رغم أذواقها وخصوصيّاتها وميولها المتناقضة. وكما منح السَّلام لمختلف الأمم التي بطبيعتها تعيش في صراع بين بعضها البعض، أخضع النّفس لإدارة منظّمة وأقام الحكمة والضمير كسيّدين على النواحي الدنيويّة لطبيعتنا… وتأكّدوا من أنّ هاتين العمليّتين لمُعزّينا الإلهي تعتمدان على بعضهما البعض. وطالما لا يسعى المسيحيّون إلى الوحدة والسلام في أعماق قلوبهم، لن تعرف الكنيسة بدورها السلام والوحدة في هذا العالم الذي يحيط بها. وبطريقة مماثلة، إن بقيت الكنسية حول العالم في هذه الحالة من الفوضى التي نشهدها، فإنّ أيّ بلد، وهو جزء بسيط من هذه الكنيسة، سيكون في حالة من الارتباك الديني الكبير. هذا ما يجب أن نفكّر فيه في الوقت الحالي، لأنّه أمر قد يخفّف آمالنا ويبدّد أوهامنا؛ لذا، لا يمكننا أن نأمل بحلول السلام عندنا في حين نعيش حالة حرب في الخارج.

You see that he who is guided by the Spirit does not always remain in the same state. He does not always advance with the same facility. “The course of man is not in his control.” It rather depends on the guidance of the Spirit who sets the pace as he pleases, sometimes torpidly, sometimes blithely, teaching him to forget the past and to strain ahead for what is still to come. If you have been attentive I think you will have seen that your inward experience echoes what Ihave outwardly described. Therefore when you feel weighed down by apathy, lukewarmness and fatigue, do not yield to cowardice or cease to study spiritual truths, but look for the hand of the one who can help you, begging like the bride, to be drawn, until finally, under the influence of grace, you feel again the vigorous pulse of life. Then you will run and shout out: “I run the way of your commandments since you have enlarged my heart.”… When you feel happy beware of boasting: “Nothing can ever shake me!” For you may be compelled to repeat for yourself the Psalmist’s sad comment: “But then you hid your face and I was terrified.” If you are wise you will try to follow the advice of the Wise Man: “in the time of adversity not to be unmindful of prosperity, and in the time of prosperity not to be forgetful of adversity.”… This will keep your hopes buoyant in times of hardship, and give you foresight when fortune favors you. You will ride above the vicissitudes of good and evil times with the poise of one sustained by values that are eternal, with that enduring, unshakeable equanimity of the man of faith who thanks God in every circumstance. So even amid the fluctuating events and inevitable shortcomings of this giddy world you will ensure for yourself a life of durable stability, provided you are renewed and reformed according to the glorious and original plan of the eternal God.

True devotion to Mary is an easy, short, perfect, and safe road to perfection, which means union with Christ. It is an easy road. It was opened up to us by Jesus when he came to us. There are no obstacles there to prevent our using it to go to him. One may, it is true, arrive at union with God by other roads. But one will encounter many more crosses, deadly perils, and difficulties to overcome. There will be dark nights, strange combats, bitter agonies. There will be steep mountains to climb, sharp patches of briars and brambles, frightful deserts. But the road of Mary is gentle and more peaceful. One finds there, it is true, great difficulties and fierce battles. But our mother is ever near, to light the darkness, to clear away doubts, to give strength, to banish fear, to help in every way. The Virgin road to Jesus, in comparison with all others, is a path of roses and wild honey.

[Nuestro Señor:] La enseñanza que les doy es que desde el momento que se declaran mis servidores, tienen que esperar la persecución… Yo fui perseguido toda mi vida… A mi nacimiento, Herodes quiso que encontrara las trampas de los fariseos. Ellos y el mismo Herodes me han perseguido, de ciudad en ciudad y me han tendido nuevas trampas durante tres años para hacerme morir… Actualmente ya no puedo, ustedes lo ven, caminar en público en Judea, sin peligro de muerte. Mi muerte fue decidida por el Sumo Sacerdote y en tres semanas será cumplida. Todo les enseña que si Me imitan predicando el Evangelio y siguiendo la verdad, los esperan las persecuciones que me han rodeado sin cesar. Tienen que recibirlas con alegría, como marcas preciosas de semejanza conmigo, como una imitación de su Bien-amado… Soportar con calma, sabiendo que si ellas les llegan es porque lo permito y en la medida que yo lo permito, y que sólo con mi permiso puede caer un cabello de sus cabezas… Aceptar en conformidad a la voluntad de Dios, deseando que sea bienvenido todo lo que llega, ya que siempre es con permiso de Dios y produce su gloria, de una forma o de otra… Sufrirlas con valentía, ofreciendo a Dios sus sufrimientos como un sacrificio… Sufrirlas rezando por sus perseguidores porque son hijos de Dios, Dios quiere su salvación y daré mi sangre por salvarlos. Yo mismo les he dado el ejemplo de rezar por todos los hombres, por nuestros perseguidores y enemigos.

[Our Lord says:] The teaching that I give you is that, as soon as you declare yourself for my servants, you must expect persecution … I was persecuted all my life … At my birth, Herod wanted me to see myself in the pitfalls of the Pharisees and Herod pursued me from city to city, and set new traps every day, You see I am no longer able to walk in public in Judea without danger of death, my death was decided by the high priest and, in three weeks, it will be accomplished. All of this tells you that if you immitate me by preaching the Gospel and following the truth, the persecution that constantly surrounded me awaits you; It will be necessary to receive it with joy, as precious marks of your resemblance to me, as an imitation of your beloved … To bear them calmly, knowing that if they arrive it is that I allow them, and that they will reach you only insofar as I will allow it, without my permission of which not a hair of your head can not fall … Who arrives is allowed by God, and produces in one way or the other his glory … Suffer it courageously by offering God your sufferings as a sacrifice, in holocaust for his glory and for the accomplishment of his will, a sacrifice which will be all the more pleasant, which will have all the more price, that your sufferings will be greater and will be offered to him with love and joy … Suffer in praying for your persecuters, God wants their salvation and I will give my blood to save them. I myself gave you the example of praying for all men, for our persecutors and our enemies.

أيُّ إنسان يمكنه أن يُفتدى بواسطة دمه الخاص في حين أن الرّب يسوع المسيح قد أهرق دمه لافتداء جميع النّاس؟ هل يوجد إنسانٌ واحد يمكن أن نقارن دمه بدم الرّب يسوع المسيح… الّذي هو وحده قد صالح العالم مع الله بواسطة دمه؟ هل هناك من تقدمة أو تضحية أسمى، أو هل هناك من محامٍ أفضل من ذاك الّذي جعل من نفسه متضرعًا من أجل خطايا الجميع وأعطى حياته من اجل خلاصنا؟ يجب علينا إذًا ألا نفتّش عن تكفيرٍ أو خلاصٍ شخصي، لأن الدّم الّذي أُهرِق كفداء عن الجميع هو دم الرّب يسوع المسيح. بهذا الدم فدانا الرّب يسوع ، هو وحده الّذي قد صالحنا مع الآب. لقد أتمّ عمله الخلاصي إلى النّهاية لأنّه أخذ على عاتقه عملنا، وهو القائل: “تَعالَوا إِليَّ جَميعاً أَيُّها المُرهَقونَ المُثقَلون، وأَنا أُريحُكم” (مت 11: 28) … ليس على الإنسان أن يعطي أي شيء مقابل خلاصه لأنّه قد غُسِل مرّة واحدة من الخطيئة بدم المسيح غير إنّه لم يُعصم من الألم لكي يتأمّل في مفاهيم الحياة ولكيلا يبتعد عن وصايا الرّب. فطالما هو على قيد الحياة، فإنّ الإنسان سيبقى يعمل ويثابر من أجل أن يحيا في الحياة الأبديّة خوفًا من أن يموت بسبب الموت علمًا إنّه قد افتُدي من الموت.

Es una gloria servir a Dios, está escrito “Sirvan al Señor en el temor” (Sal 2,11); “Feliz aquel servidor a quien su señor, al llegar, encuentre ocupado en este trabajo” (Mt 24,46). Sin embargo, dice a los discípulos “Ustedes son mis amigos si hacen lo que yo les mando. Ya no los llamo servidores, porque el servidor ignora lo que hace su señor; yo los llamo amigos, porque les he dado a conocer todo lo que oí de mi Padre” (Jn 15,14-15). Lo ven entonces, la perfección comporta distintos grados. Desde una altura el Señor nos llama a ascender hacia una altura más elevada. El que se ha rendido bienaventurado y perfecto en el temor de Dios, caminará de virtud en virtud y de perfección en perfección. En la ardiente prontitud de su alma se elevará, del temor a la esperanza. Luego escuchará de nuevo el llamado divino que invita a un estado más santo todavía: la caridad. Si se muestra como “servidor fiel y prudente” (Mt 24,45), pasará a la intimidad de la amistad y la adopción filial. Es en este sentido que es necesario tomar mis palabras. No quiere decir que la consideración de futuras penas o de la bienaventurada retribución prometida a los santos no sea de ningún valor. Es útil porque introduce a los primeros grados de la bienaventuranza. Pero la caridad irradia de una confianza más plena y de una alegría sin fin.

In the course of the ages two great revolutions have shaken the earth; we call them the two Covenants. The first one caused people to pass from idol worship to the Law, and the second, from the Law to the Gospel. A third upheaval is predicted: that which will transport us from below to above, whereupon there will be no more movement or disturbance. Now these two Covenants both share one same characteristic..: neither of them suddenly caused an instantaneous transformation… They were not to force but to persuade us. For what is imposed by force does not last… The Old Testament manifested the Father clearly and the Son obscurely. The New Testament has revealed the Son and hinted at the divinity of the Spirit. Today the Spirit is alive in our midst and is making himself know more clearly. It would have been hazardous, so long as the Father’s divinity was not recognized, to preach the Son openly, and so long as the Son’s divinity was not acknowledged, to impose… the Holy Spirit. One might have feared that, like people who are surfeited or like those who stare at the sun with weak eyes, believers would have run the risk of losing what they had strength to bear. So the glory of the Trinity had to shine out in successive steps or, as David says, “from strength to strength” (Ps 84[83],8) and progressively, from one degree of glory to another… I would like to add one further consideration: our Savior knew certain things that he considered his disciples would be unable to bear in spite of all the teaching they had already received. For the same reasons as I said above, he kept these things hidden. And he emphasized that when the Spirit came, he would teach them all things.
