My brethren, don’t let us remain in carelessness and ease or lightly put off for tomorrow, or even later, a start to our work. “Now is the favorable time,” the apostle Paul says, “this is the day of salvation” (2Cor 6:2). The present moment is the time for repentance, later on will be that of reward; now is the time of perseverance, our day of comforting is yet to come. Now God is helping those who turn away from evil, later he will judge our deeds and words and thoughts. Today we are profiting from his patience; at the resurrection, when each of us receives according to our deeds, we shall know the justice of his judgments. Oh, how much longer will we hold back from obeying Christ, who calls us into his heavenly Kingdom? Are we not going to purify ourselves? Won’t we firmly decide to forsake our customary way of life so as to follow the Gospel to the end?

I live in carelessness, and the ax is near: grant me, by your entreaties, to rise up again, Praiseworthy Precursor, that I may not be, like a tree without fruit, sent to the unquenchable fire. The terrible Day is at the gates, and I am laden with overwhelming burdens: remove this weight from me, you who baptized the Lord, by your most pure supplications. Mother of God, you have shown yourself the throne of God, on which he sat in the flesh to raise from the original fall the men who celebrate you with words of thanksgiving. I have heard, O Lord, what you have spoken, and I have feared; I have considered your works, and I have been amazed: glory to your power, O Lord! Heal, I beg you, O Precursor, my heart wounded by the attacks of the bandits, with the energetic remedy of your divine intercession. Cast down, O Precursor, the sin still alive in my soul, and give me now to straighten myself, while I slide towards pleasures. Hermanos, vosotros ya conocéis al que viene; considerad ahora de dónde viene y adónde va. Viene del corazón de Dios Padre al seno de una Virgen Madre. Viene de las alturas del cielo a las regiones inferiores de la tierra. Entonces, ¿qué? ¿No hemos de vivir en esta tierra? Sí, porque él mismo está en ella; porque ¿dónde estaremos bien sin él? «¿No te tengo a ti en el cielo?; y contigo ¿qué me importa la tierra sin ti, el Dios de mi corazón y mi carne, mi lote perpetuo?» (Sl 72, 25-26)… Era preciso que estuviera en juego un interés grande para que una tan alta majestad se dignara descender desde tan lejos a una estancia tan indigna de ella. Sí, estaba en juego un interés grande puesto que allí se manifestaron, en una medida tan amplia y abundante, la misericordia, la bondad, la caridad. En efecto, ¿por qué vino Cristo?… Nos lo muestran claramente sus palabras y sus gestos: vino con presura desde los montes a buscar la oveja número cien, la que se había extraviado, para hacer estallar su misericordia en favor de los hijos de los hombres. Vino por nosotros. ¡Admirable condescendencia de Dios que busca! ¡Admirable dignidad del hombre así buscado! ¡Sin pretender una locura el hombre se puede gloriar de ello: no que sea algo de valor por sí mismo, pero sí que el que lo creó lo estimó de gran precio! En comparación con esta gloria, las riquezas y la gloria del mundo y todo lo que se puede ambicionar de él no son nada. ¿Qué es el hombre, Señor, para que lo levantes tan alto y ligues a él tu corazón? Éramos nosotros los que debíamos ir hacia Jesucristo… Pero un doble obstáculo nos privaba de avanzar: nuestros ojos estaban muy enfermos, y Dios habita en la luz inaccesible (1Tm 6,16). Paralíticos yaciendo sobre nuestro lecho éramos incapaces de alcanzar la morada de Dios tan elevada. Por eso el buenísimo Salvador y dulce médico de las almas bajó de lo alto donde habita. Así suavizó para nuestros ojos enfermos el resplandor de su luz.

You too, if you wish it, can deserve the exalted quality of the name of God’s angel. Each one of you, in so far as he can, in so far as he receives an inspiration from on high, if he recalls his neighbor from his wickedness, takes care to encourage him to do good, proclaims the eternal kingdom or eternal punishment to one astray – each one of you is truly an angel of Jesus’ holy words. No one should say, I am unable to give counsel, I am not qualified to encourage anyone. Do as much as you can, lest you be tormented for having badly kept what you received. He who was given only one talent was more eager to hide it than to distribute it (Mt 25,14f.)… Draw others as far as you consider you have advanced; desire to have comrades on your way toward God. If any of you, my friends, is going to the market, or perhaps to the public baths, he will invite someone whom he sees to have nothing else to do to come with him. That earthly kind of action is habitual among you. So, if you are going toward God, take care not to go to him alone. The one who has already received in his heart a word of heavenly love may also return to his neighbors an external word of encouragement.

Brethren, you know who it is who is coming, now consider whence he comes and where he is going. He comes from the Father’s heart into the womb of the Virgin Mary. He comes from the heights of heaven into the lowest regions of the earth. What, then? Don’t we have to live on this earth? Yes indeed, provided he is dwelling there himself, for where will we be at ease without him? “Whom else have I in heaven but you, what can I desire on earth if not you, God of my heart and my portion forever?” (Ps 73[72],25-26). Some great benefit must have been at stake for so high a majesty to condescend to come down from so far away into a resting place so unworthy of it. Indeed there was a great benefit at stake in that mercy, goodness and charity were revealed there in great and abundant measure. For why did Jesus Christ come?… His words and deeds show us clearly. He came with great speed from the mountains to search for the hundredth sheep who was lost, to make his mercy towards the children of men shine forth. He came for us. O wonderful condescension of the God who seeks! O wonderful dignity of the man thus sought! Recklessly can we take pride in this: not because we are something of ourselves but because he who has done it has valued us at so great a price! By comparison with this glory, all the riches and glory of the world and all we could possibly aim to achieve are worthless. What is man, O Lord, that you thus raise him up, that you set your heart on him? It was for us to make our way towards Jesus Christ… Yet a double obstacle stood in our way: our eyes were so feeble and God dwells in inaccessible light (1Tm 6,16). Cripples lying on our stretchers, we were unable to reach a dwelling place so high as that of God. That is why our good Savior and sweet physician of our souls came down from on high where he dwells. He softened the brightness of his light for the sake of our eyes’ feebleness.

“Look at the fig tree and all the trees; when they produce their fruit you know that summer is near. So too, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.” He means that just as the coming of summer is recognized by the fruit on the trees, so is the nearness of the kingdom of God recognized by the destruction of the world. These words show that the fruit of the world is destruction: it increases only to fall, it produces only to destroy by its disasters whatever it produces. The kingdom of God is aptly compared to summer, because it is then that the clouds of our sorrow pass away, and the days of life shine with the brightness of the eternal sun. … “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” Nothing among material realities is more lasting than the heavens and the earth, and nothing among realities passes away as quickly as an utterance. … Therefore, the Lord declares: “Heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away.” He means: “Nothing that is lasting in your world lasts for eternity without change; and everything that in me is perceived as passing away is kept firm, without passing away. My utterance, which passes away, expresses thoughts that endure without change.” … Therefore, my friends, do not love what you see cannot long exist. Keep in mind the apostle John’s precept, in which he counsels us not “to love the world or the things in the world, because if anyone loves the world the love of the Father is not in him” (1 Jn 2:15).

“Vendrá nuestro Dios manifiestamente, y no permanecerá en silencio” (Sal 49,3 Vulgata). En efecto, Cristo el Señor, nuestro Dios, el Hijo de Dios, vino a escondidas en su primera venida, y vendrá de forma manifiesta en la segunda. Cuando vino oculto, no fue conocido más que por sus servidores; Cuando se manifieste, se dará a conocer a buenos y malos. Cuando vino oculto, fue para ser juzgado, cuando se manifieste con claridad, será para ser él el juez. En otro tiempo fue juzgado, y se quedó en silencio, el profeta ya había predicho este silencio: “Como cordero llevado al matadero, como oveja ante el esquilador, no abría la boca” (Isaías 53, 7), pero “nuestro Dios vendrá manifiestamente, y no permanecerá en silencio»… Ahora lo que llamamos felicidad en este mundo, los malos también la tienen, y lo que llamamos desgracia en este mundo, también la poseen los buenos. Si los hombres no creen en estas realidades, y no creen en las realidades futuras, es porque observan que los bienes y los males de este mundo pertenecen por igual a buenos y malos. Si ambicionan las riquezas, ven que estas arrastran a los peores hombres, así como a los buenos. Si tienen horror a la pobreza y la miseria de esta vida, ven que éstas hacen sufrir no sólo a los malos, sino también a los buenos, y dicen en su corazón: “Dios no ve nada” (Sal 93,7), no le interesan los asuntos de los hombres. Nos deja completamente al azar, rodando en el profundo abismo de este mundo, y no nos muestra su providencia. Y desprecian a los preceptos de Dios, porque no ven que se manifieste su justicia… Dios se reserva un montón de cosas para el juicio final, pero algunas de estas cosas, se juzgan ahora, con el fin de que aquellos que no esperan el juicio, teman y se conviertan. Porque Dios no condena, sino que salva, y por lo tanto es paciente con los malos, para que lleguen a ser buenos.

«Our God will come openly and will not keep silent» (Ps 50[49],3 Vg). The first coming of Christ the Lord, God’s Son and our God, was in obscurity; the second will be in sight of the whole world. When he came in obscurity no one recognized him but his own servants; when he comes openly he will be known by both good people and bad. When he came in obscurity, it was to be judged; when he comes openly it will be to judge. He was silent at his trial, as the prophet foretold: «He was like a sheep led to the slaughter, like a lamb before his shearers. He did not open his mouth» (Is 53,7). But, «Our God will come openly; our God will come and will not keep silence»… Nowadays, good people and bad enjoy this world’s so-called happiness; good people and bad suffer from what are deemed this world’s misfortunes. Those whose lives are geared to the present rather than the future are impressed by the fact that this world’s blessings and sufferings fall to the lot of good and bad without distinction. If wealth is their ambition, they see it being enjoyed not only by decent folk, but also by people of the worst kind. If they are in dread of poverty and all the other miseries of this world, they also see that the good and the bad both suffer from them. Therefore they say to themselves, “God does not see» (Ps 94[93],7); he does not care about human affairs, he exercises no control over them. On the contrary; he has sent us into the abyss of this world, and simply abandoned us to its sufferings. He shows no sign of his providence. Consequently, seeing no evidence of anyone being called to account, such people hold God’s commands in derision… If God always gave sentence here and now, there would be nothing reserved for the Day of Judgment. That is why much is kept for that day. But in order to put the fear of God into those whose cases are deferred, and so convert them, some judgments are made here and now. For it is clear that God takes no pleasure in condemning. His desire is to save, and he bears patiently with evil people in order to make them good.

The Lord said to his apostles: “You are the light of the world.” How accurate they are, those analogies our Lord uses in referring to our fathers in the faith! He calls “salt” those who teach us God’s wisdom and “light” those who dispel from our hearts the blindness and obscurity of our doubt. So it is very right that the apostles should receive this name of light. In the darkness of this world they proclaim the brightness of heaven, the splendor of eternity. Didn’t Peter become a light for the whole world and for all the faithful when he said to the Lord: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”? (Mt 16:16) What greater enlightenment could the human race have received than to learn through Peter that the Son of the living God was the creator of its own light? And Saint Paul was no less a great light for the world. While all the earth was blinded by the darkness of its misdeeds, he was raised even to heaven (2Cor 12:2) and, on his return, made known the mysteries of the everlasting glory. That is why he could neither hide himself, as in the case of the city set on a hilltop, nor let himself be put under a bushel measure, since Christ, by the light of his majesty, had set him alight like a chosen lamp filled with the oil of the Holy Spirit. Hence, my friends, if, renouncing the illusory things of this world, we have at heart to seek out the savor of God’s wisdom, let us taste the salt of the apostles.
