O Mary, temple of the Trinity. O Mary, bearer of fire. O Mary, dispenser of mercy. O Mary, restorer of human generation, because the world was repurchased by means of the sustenance that your flesh found in the Word, Christ repurchased the world with his Passion and you with your suffering. O Mary, peaceful ocean. O Mary, giver of peace. O Mary, fruitful land. You, O Mary, are that new plant from which we have the fragrant flower of the Word, only-begotten Son of God, because this Word was sown in you, O fruitful land. You are the land and the plant. O Mary, vehicle of fire you bore the fire hidden and veiled beneath the ash of your humanity. Today, O Mary, you have become a book in which our rule is written. In you, today, is written the wisdom of the eternal Father. Immediately imprinted in you, this Word bears the cross of holy desire which is grafted onto it. Barely conceived, he is possessed with the desire to die for the salvation of men, in whose favor He takes human flesh. It was a great cross to carry for so long this desire that he would have wanted to immediately realize.

In truth we are not called once only, but many times; all through our life Christ is calling us. He called us first in Baptism; but afterwards also; whether we obey His voice or not, He graciously calls us still. If we fall from our Baptism, He calls us to repent; if we are striving to fulfil our calling, He calls us on from grace to grace, and from holiness to holiness, while life is given us. Abraham was called from his home (Gn 12:1), Peter from his nets (Mt 4:18), Matthew from his office (Mt 9:9), Elisha from his farm (1 K 19:19), Nathanael from his retreat (Jn 1:47); we are all in course of calling, on and on, from one thing to another, having no resting-place, but mounting towards our eternal rest, and obeying one command only to have another put upon us. He calls us again and again, in order to justify us again and again, – and again and again, and more and more, to sanctify and glorify us. It were well if we understood this; but we are slow to master the great truth, that Christ is, as it were, walking among us, and by His hand, or eye, or voice, bidding us follow Him. We do not understand that His call is a thing which takes place now. We think it took place in the Apostles’ days; but we do not believe in it, we do not look out for it in our own case.

Beloved: Concerning this salvation, prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and investigated it,
investigating the time and circumstances that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated when it testified in advance to the sufferings destined for Christ and the glories to follow them.
It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you with regard to the things that have now been announced to you by those who preached the good news to you (through) the holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels longed to look.
Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, live soberly, and set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Like obedient children, do not act in compliance with the desires of your former ignorance
but, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct,
for it is written, “Be holy because I (am) holy.”

All of us who believe in Jesus Christ are said to be “living stones” according to the statement of scripture when it says: “Like living stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1Pt 2,5). We have learned to notice in the case of material stones, that those which are stronger and more powerful are placed first in the foundations, so that the weight of the whole building can be put securely on them. The stones that follow, of slightly inferior quality, are set close beside the foundation stones according to the weight carried by these stones… until they reach the roof. Similarly you must understand that from among these living stones there are some in the foundations of this spiritual building. Now who are those who are laid in the foundations? “The apostles and the prophets.” This is what Paul himself has to say in his teaching, “You are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the corner stone” (Eph 2,20). You must learn that Christ also himself is the foundation of the building which we are now describing, so that you may more eagerly prepare yourself for the construction of his building and be found to be one of those stones which are closer to the foundation. For these are the words of Paul the apostle: “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Christ Jesus” (1Cor 3,11). Blessed therefore are those who will be found to have constructed sacred and religious buildings upon that glorious foundation!

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.’

Could God not supply the world with any other remedy than that of the death of his Son?… Most certainly. And he was able to redeem us by a thousand other means than the death of his Son. But he did not wish to because what was sufficient for our salvation was not so for satisfying his love. And to show us how much he loved us this divine Son died from the most harsh and ignominious of deaths as that of the cross. What remains, then, and what consequence can we draw from this if not that, since he died for love of us, we too should die for love of him, or, if we are unable to die for love, at least we should not live otherwise than for him?… This is what the great Saint Augustine lamented about: “Lord,” he said, “is it possible someone should know you died for their sake and not live for you?” And that great lover, Saint Francis, used to say with sobs: “Ah, you died for love and no one loves you in return!”… There is no other redemption but by this cross. O my God, how useful and what profit it is for us to contemplate the cross and Passion! Is it possible to contemplate this humility of our Savior without becoming humble and loving humiliations? Can anyone see his obedience without being obedient? No indeed, none has ever looked at our crucified Savior and remained dead or sick. And on the other hand, all those who die do so because they refuse to look at him, like those among the children of Israel who did not wish to look at the serpent Moses caused to be set up on the pillar.

God and Father of all who believe in you,
you promised Abraham that he would become the father of all nations (Gn 12,3),
and through the death and resurrection of Christ
you fulfil that promise:
everywhere throughout the world you increase your chosen people.
May we respond to your call
by joyfully accepting your invitation to the new life of grace.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Father,
even today we see the wonders
of the miracles you worked long ago.
You once saved a single nation from slavery
and now you offer that salvation to all through baptism.
May the peoples of the world become true sons of Abraham
and prove worthy of the heritage of Israel.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Father,
you increase your Church
by continuing to call all people to salvation.
Listen to our prayers
and always watch over those you clenase in baptism.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. God of unchanging power and light,
look with mercy and favor on your entire Church.
Bring lasting salvation to mankind,
so that the world may see
the fallen lifted up,
the old made new,
and all things brought to perfection,
through him who is their origin,
our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
