At that time Jesus said to His disciples: When you fast, be not as the hypocrites, sad. For they disfigure their face, that they may appear unto men to fast. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.
But thou, when thou fastest anoint thy head, and wash thy face;
That thou appear not to men to fast, but to thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret, will repay thee.
Lay not up to yourselves treasures on earth: where the rust, and moth consume, and where thieves break through, and steal.
But lay up to yourselves treasures in heaven: where neither the rust nor moth doth consume, and where thieves do not break through, nor steal.
For where thy treasure is, there is thy heart also.

إنّ الأبيقوريّون، الذين لا يأملون بحياة أخرى بعد الموت، والذين لا يعرفون سوى ملذّات الجسد، يقولون: “فلْنَأكُلْ ولْنَشرَبْ فإِنَّنا غَدًا نَموت” (1كور 15: 32)… لكنّ المسيحيّين الذين تنتظرهم بعد الممات حياة مختلفة، لا بل حياة أكثر سعادة، يجب أن يتحاشوا هذا المنطق. لا بل يجب أن يذكروا هذه الحقيقة: “إنّنا نموت غدًا”، وأن يضيفوا إليها: “فلنَصمْ ونصلِّ لأنّ الموت قد يأتي غدًا”. لكنّني أطلب أيضًا أمرًا آخر، وهو الشرط الثالث، وأنا لا أريد أن أتجاهل الأمر الأساسي الذي يجب أن نحترمه في المقام الأوّل: ليكن صومنا إشباعًا لجوع الفقراء. وإن عجزتم عن الصوم، فاعملوا بالأحرى على إطعام أولئك الذين من خلال إشباعهم تحصلون على المغفرة. هذا إذًا ما يجب على المسيحيّين قوله: “فلنصم ولنصلِّ ولنعطِ الفقراء لأنّنا غدًا قد نموت”.

لِتَكُونَ صَدَقَتُكَ في الخَفَاء، وأَبُوكَ الَّذي يَرَى في الخَفَاءِ هُوَ يُجَازِيك.

My dear brethren, today we set out on the great Lenten journey. So let us take our food and drink along in our boat, putting onto the chest the abundant mercy we shall need. For our fasting is a hungry one, our fasting is a thirsty one if it isn’t sustained by goodness and refreshed by mercy. Our fasting will be cold, our fasting will flag if the fleece of almsgiving doesn’t clothe it, if the garment of compassion does not wrap it around. Brethren, what spring is for the land, mercy is for fasting: the soft, spring winds cause all the buds on the plains to flower; the mercy of our fast causes all our seeds to grow until they blossom and bear fruit for the heavenly harvest. What oil is to the lamp, goodness is to our fast. As the oily fat sets the lamp alight and, in spite of so little to feed it, keeps it burning to our comfort all night long, so goodness makes our fasting shine: it casts its beams until it reaches the full brightness of self-restraint. What the sun is to the day, almsgiving is to our fast: the sun’s splendor increases the light of day, breaking through the dullness of the clouds; almsgiving together with fasting sanctifies its holiness and, thanks to the light of goodness, dispels from our desires anything that could petrify. In short, what the body is for the soul, generosity acts similarly for the fast: when the soul leaves the body it brings about death; if generosity abandons the fast, it is its death.

When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”

Brothers and sisters: We are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him.
Working together, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain.
For he says: “In an acceptable time I heard you, and on the day of salvation I helped you.” Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness; in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me. For I acknowledge my offense, and my sin is before me always: “Against you only have I sinned,
and done what is evil in your sight.” A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence, and your Holy Spirit take not from me. Give me back the joy of your salvation, and a willing spirit sustain in me.
O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Hermanos míos, hoy empezamos el gran viaje de la Cuaresma. Por lo tanto llevemos en nuestro barco todas nuestras provisiones de comida y bebida, colocando sobre el casco misericordia abundante que necesitaremos. Porque nuestro ayuno tiene hambre, nuestro ayuno tiene sed, sino se nutre de bondad, sino se sacia de misericordia. Nuestro ayuno tiene frío, nuestro ayuno falla, si la cabellera de la limosna no lo cubre, si el vestido de la compasión no lo envuelve. Hermanos, lo que es la primavera para la tierra, la misericordia es para el ayuno: el viento suave de la primavera hace florecer todos los brotes de las llanuras; la misericordia del ayuno siembra nuestras semillas hasta la floración, estas dan fruto hasta la recolecta celestial. Lo que es el aceite para la lámpara, la bondad es para el ayuno. Como la materia grasa del aceite mantiene encendida la luz de la lámpara y, también con un pequeño alimento, la hace brillar para consuelo de todos en la noche, así también la bondad hace resplandecer el ayuno: desprende rayos hasta que alcanza el pleno esplendor de la continencia. Lo que es el sol para el día, la limosna es para el ayuno: el esplendor del sol aumenta la plenitud del día, disipa la oscuridad de la noche; la limosna acompaña el ayuno santificando la santidad y, gracias a la luz de la bondad, purifica de nuestros deseos todo lo que podría ser mortífero. En una palabra, lo que es el cuerpo para el alma, la generosidad es para el ayuno: cuando el alma se retira del cuerpo, le ocasiona la muerte; si la generosidad se aleja del ayuno, es su muerte.
