Saturday, December 30 : Saint Charles de Foucauld
( Our Lord speaks)…After my Presentation and after the flight into Egypt I retired into Nazareth and their I lived all my childhood and my youth until my thirtieth year. This again I did for you, for love of you. What is the life I led? I led it for your instruction. All through those thirty years I was teaching you, not by words but by silent example. What is it that you should learn from it? First you should learn that good, infinite divine good, can be done silently, quietly, without words or noise, by a good example. What example? That of piety, of loving fulfillment of duty, of kindness to all around one, of goodness to all near, to home ties faithfully observed. An example of poverty, hard work, abjection, recollection, retirement, of a life hidden in God, in a life of prayer and penance, a life lost and immersed in God. You will learn to live by the labor of your hands, that you may be a burden on no one, and to have something to give to the poor. I give to this manner of life an incomparable beauty, in that you can imitate me in it. All who would be perfect should live poorly, in faithful imitation of my poverty at Nazareth.
