Saturday, November 25 : St Hildegard of Bingen

The man who follows the way of madness and despises creative wisdom condemns himself: no longer having any limits in evil, he ignores the future life. He does not even want to know if there is another life, and he refuses to carefully scrutinize the causes of his own changing nature. This man can still understand his childhood, his adolescence, his youth and his maturity, but he is unable to understand what he becomes in his decrepitude and the meaning of this transformation of his being. Reason shows him that he has a beginning, but he is unable to know, to understand how it is possible that the soul is immortal and that it has no end … As long as he is in his body, man’s thoughts are multiplying, just as are multiplied without end the echoes of angelic praise. Thought already animates youth, we then formulate it by the voice of reason and then act by following it. But the soul’s action is not the source her own life ; she has a beginning. Eternity alone is the source of its’ own life and never weakens: before time exists, it was already eternal life. When the soul becomes eternity , it will change its name: it will no longer act in man through thought and reason, but will dwell in the praises of the angels that are spirit. If she will be called Spirit, it is because she will no longer struggle with the body, with the flesh. Man carries the name of the living, because he is already alive in this world as long as he lives by the breath of the Spirit, but he will be fully alive only when he will be transfigured into immortality by carnal death, . After the last judgment, it is through his body and his soul that he will be eternally life.
