Sunday, December 3 : Saint John-Mary Vianney
My brothers, no longer delay returning to God. (…) Since God offers you his grace today, why don’t you take advantage of it? To say that nothing presses, that you have time, isn’t it, my brothers, reasoning like fools? See, what are you capable of when you are sick? Alas! Nothing at all; You can’t even do an act of contrition, because you are so absorbed by your sufferings, that you do not think of your salvation. Well, my brothers, are we so miserable that we must wait for death to convert us? At least do for your poor soul what you do for your body! When you are dangerously injured, are you waiting for six months or a year to apply the remedies you think you need to heal yourself? When you are attacked by a ferocious beast, are you waiting to be half devoured to shout for help? Do you not immediately implore the help of your neighbors? Why, my brothers, do you not act the same when you see your poor soul soiled and disfigured by sin, reduced under the tyranny of demons? Why don’t you seek the assistance of heaven immediately and have recourse to penance? Yes, my brothers, some great sinners you are, since you want to leave sin one day, why wouldn’t you leave it today, since God gives you the time and graces for just that?
