“Awake, you sleeper, rise from the dead and Christ will give you light!” (Eph 5,14)… We often say of those who are manifestly dead that they are sleeping; and indeed they are all sleeping for the One who is able to awaken them. For you a dead person is truly dead: you may well slap and shake him…, he will not wake up. But for Christ, the man he commanded to “Rise up!” was merely sleeping and he rose up immediately (Lk 7,14). It is easy enough to waken a sleeper from his bed but Christ awakens a dead man from his tomb with even greater ease… “By now there will be a stench; he has been dead for four days” (Jn 11,39). But the Lord, for whom all things are done with ease, is coming… No bonds hold secure before the Savior’s voice. The powers over the dwellings of the dead tremble and Lazarus is restored to life… For Christ’s life-giving will even this death of four days is merely a sleep. But reflect over the nature of this resurrection. Lazarus, coming alive out of the tomb, was as yet unable to walk. So the Lord commanded his disciples: “Untie him and let him go”. Christ raised him up; they set him free from his bonds. The true majesty of the God who brings the dead back to life emerges in this narrative. The Word of life (1Jn 1,1) exhorts those who are bound by their evil habits… Having been strongly admonished these sinners return to themselves, begin to reconsider their lives and feel the weight of the chains of their evil habits. Ashamed, they make up their minds to change their lives. From then on they are raised from death and brought back to life since they condemn their former way of living. However, even though they are alive once more, they cannot walk as yet…; their bonds have to be untied. This is the ministry our Lord entrusted to his disciples when he said: “Whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Mt 18,18).

You have heard, O Virgin, that you are to conceive and bring forth a Son, and that it will not be through the power of man but by the virtue of the Holy Spirit. The angel awaits your reply, for it is time that he should return to God who sent him. We, too, are waiting, O Lady, for a word of mercy: we, who are groaning under the sentence of condemnation. See, the price of our salvation is offered to you; if you consent, we shall at once be delivered. By the Eternal Word of God were we all created, and behold we will all die. By your brief answer we shall be refreshed and recalled to life… Hasten, then, O Lady, to give your answer; hasten to speak the word so longed for by all on earth, in limbo, and in heaven. Yes, the King and Lord of all things, who has «greatly desired your beauty» (Ps 45[44],12), desires as eagerly your word of consent by which He has purposed to save the world. He whom you pleased by your silence will be yet more pleased by your reply. Hark! He calls to you from heaven: “O most beautiful among women, let me hear your voice” (Sg 1,8; 2,14)… Answer the angel quickly, then; yes, through the angel give your consent to your God. Answer one syllable, receive the Word; utter your own word and conceive that which is Divine. Speak the word that is transitory, and embrace the Word that is everlasting… «Behold,» she says, «the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done to me according to your word.»

“Cacen a los zorros, a esos zorros pequeños que arrasan las viñas, ¡y nuestras viñas están en flor!” (Ct 2,15). ¿Podemos penetrar la profundidad de este pensamiento? ¡Qué maravilla la grandeza divina que aquí está contenida y qué trascendencia del poder de Dios nos es revelada en este texto! El denominado con expresiones tan fuertes como homicida, “soberano de este mundo de tinieblas, espíritu del mal que habita en el espacio.…” (cf. Ef 6,12) y “el que tenía el dominio de la muerte” (Heb 2,14), el Verbo lo describe en su temible naturaleza, mostrándolo grande y poderoso, jefe de legiones demoníacas. Sin embargo, ¿cómo lo denomina el verdadero y único Poder? Un pequeño zorrito. A todos sus seguidores, a toda la armada a su servicio, el que anima a los cazadores a cazarlo los nombra con desprecio. (…) Quizás podríamos decir que ellos son los santos apóstoles que envió para cazar tales bestias. Había dicho: “Yo los haré pescadores de hombres” (cf. Mt 4,19). No podrían haber llevado a buen término la pesca de hombres si no hubieran antes cazado esas bestias. Esos pequeños zorritos, con sus guaridas, recuerdan a los corazones que han tapizado un espacio, para que sea un lugar en el que el Hijo de Dios pueda reposar su cabeza, al no tener más refugio en sus corazones la raza de zorros. (…) El Verbo les dice que todas las potencias de la tierra contra las que el hombre lucha, (…) son pequeños zorritos, astutos pero patéticos si se los compara a su poder divino. Si se los domina, nuestra viña humana, es decir la naturaleza humana, recobrará su belleza propia y preludiará con flores de vida virtuosa la abundancia de racimos. “Cacen a los zorros, a esos zorros pequeños que arrasan las viñas, ¡y nuestras viñas están en flor!”.

“Catch us the small foxes that ravage the vines, because our vines are in bloom” (CT 2,15). Can we precisely penetrate the depth of this thought? What a wonder of divine grandeur is here locked up, what transcendence of the power of God is revealed to us in this text! The one of which it is spoken with so strong expressions, homicide, the powerful in malice (…) the dominator of the power of darkness (EP 6,12), the one who has the power of death (he 2,14) , (…) The Word finally describes the formidable nature to us, showing it so great and powerful, chief of the demonic legions, how does the true and the only power name it? A small fox. The whole army he has at his service, this is how, in an equal contempt, the one who encourages hunting hunts. (…) Perhaps we can say that these hunters are the holy apostles that he sent to hunt such animals and to whom he said: “I will make you fishermen of men” (Mt 4,19). Indeed, they could not have carried out their fishing of men and to take the souls of the saved in the net of their message, if they had previously chased these animals, these small foxes, to their dens, I want to say pure hearts where they make a place, there where the Son of God could rest His head, when the breed of the foxes would no longer have a home in hearts. (…) The Word says to them: all these powers of the earth against which man leads his struggle, (…) are only small foxes, cunning but pitiful if compared to your power. If you master them, then our vineyard, that is to say human nature, will cover its own beauty, and it will prelude to the clusters by the flowers of virtuous life. “Catch us the little foxes that ravage the vines, because our vines are in bloom”.

Nuestro tiempo es dramático y al mismo tiempo fascinador. Mientras por un lado los hombres dan la impresión de ir detrás de la prosperidad material y de sumergirse cada vez más en el materialismo consumista, por otro, manifiestan la angustiosa búsqueda de sentido, la necesidad de interioridad, el deseo de aprender nuevas formas y modos de concentración y de oración. No sólo en las culturas impregnadas de religiosidad, sino también en las sociedades secularizadas, se busca la dimensión espiritual de la vida como antídoto a la deshumanización… La Iglesia tiene un inmenso patrimonio espiritual para ofrecer a la humanidad: en Cristo, que se proclama «el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida» (Jn 14,6). La Iglesia debe de ser fiel a Cristo; ella es su cuerpo y recibe la misión de hacerle presente. Es necesario que “siga el mismo camino que Cristo, el camino de la pobreza, de la obediencia, del servicio y de la inmolación de sí hasta la muerte, de la cual salió victorioso por su resurrección” (Vaticano II, AG 59). Así pues, la Iglesia debe hacer todo lo posible para realizar su misión en el mundo y llegar a todos los pueblos; tiene también el derecho, concedido por Dios, de llevar a cabo la realización de su plan. La libertad religiosa, a veces todavía limitada o restringida, es la condición y la garantía de todas las libertades que fundamentan el bien común de las personas y de los pueblos. Es de desear que se conceda a todos y en todo lugar la verdadera libertad religiosa… Se trata de un derecho inalienable de toda persona humana. Por otra parte, la Iglesia se dirige al hombre en el respeto total hacia su libertad; la misión no restringe la libertad sino que la favorece. La Iglesia propone; no impone jamás; respeta a las personas y a las culturas, y se detiene ante el altar de la conciencia. A los que, bajo diversos pretextos, se oponen a su actividad misionera, la Iglesia les repite: “¡Abrid las puertas a Cristo!”

منذ البدء وحتّى هذه الأزمنة، وهي الأخيرة، سمح الله لنا أن ندعَ ذواتنا تنحرف بحسب ميولنا العشوائيّة، مُنقادين باللّذات والأشواق. ليس ذلك البتّة لأنّه يستمتع بخطايانا؛ إنمّا تساهل فقط في زمن القلق هذا، دون أن يرضى بها. لقد حضّر الله هذا الزّمن من أجل العدالة، لكي نصبح الآن مستحقّين بفعل الطيبة الإلهيّة، بعد اقتناعنا بأنّنا غير أهلٍ للحياة خلال هذه الفترة بسبب هفواتنا… هو لم يبغضنا؛ هو لم يرفضنا… بل برحمته لنا، أخذَ على عاتقه خطايانا، وأسلمَ ابنه فديةً عنّا: القدّوس من أجل الكفّار، والبريء من أجل الخبثاء، و “البارّ من أجل الفجّار” (1بط 3: 18)، والنزيه من أجل الفاسدين، وغير المائت من أجل المائتين. ما الذي يقدر أن يسترَ خطايانا غير عدالته هو؟ بمَن نستطيع أن نُبرَّر نحن…، سوى بابن الله الوحيد؟ تبادل لطيف، عمل لا يُسبَر، ومعروف غير منتظر! جريمة عدد كبير من الناس قد سُترَت بعدل واحدٍ، وعدالة واحدٍ تُبرِّر أعدادًا من المذنبين. فيما مضى، أقنع طبيعتنا بعدم قدرتها على نيل الحياة؛ والآن، أبانَ لنا المخلّص القادر على خلاص الذين لم يقدروا أن يخلصوا. من هاتين الناحيتين، أراد أن يمنحنا الإيمان بصلاحه، وأن يجعلنا نرى فيه المغذّي، والأب، والمعلّم، والمستشار، والطبيب، والذكاء، والنور، والشرف، والمجد، والقوّة والحياة.

“Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who watches and keeps his clothes ready” says the Lord (Rv 16:15)… When, then, Christ said that his coming would be soon, yet by saying it would be sudden, he said that to us it would seem long… How it is that Christianity is always failing, yet always continuing? God only knows who wills it,—but so it is; and it is no paradox to say, on the one hand, that it has eighteen hundred years, that it may last many years more, and yet that it draws to an end, nay, is likely to end any day. And God would have us give our minds and hearts to the latter side of the alternative, to open them to impressions from this side, viz. that the end is coming;—it being a wholesome thing to live as if that will come in our day, which may come any day. It was different during the ages before Christ came. The Saviour was to come. He was to bring perfection, and religion was to grow towards that perfection. There was a system of successive revelations going on… Time was measured out for believing minds before Christ came, by the word of prophecy… The chosen people were not bidden to expect him at once; but after a sojourning in Canaan, and a captivity in Egypt, and a wandering in the wilderness, and judges, and kings, and prophets, at length seventy long weeks were determined to introduce him into the world. Thus his delay was, as I may say, recognized then; and, during his delay, other doctrines, other rules, were given to fill the interval. But when once the Christ had come, as the Son over his own house, and with his perfect Gospel, nothing remained but to gather in his saints. No higher Priest could come,—no truer doctrine. The Light and Life of men had appeared, and had suffered, and had risen again; and nothing more was left to do… It was the last time. And hence, though time intervene between Christ’s first and second coming, it is not recognized in the Gospel scheme… It runs, not towards the end, but along it, and on the brink of it; and is at all times equally near that great event, which, did it run towards, it would at once run into. Christ, then, is ever at our doors; as near eighteen hundred years ago as now, and not nearer now than then; and not nearer when he comes than now.

Who multiplieth the nations and destroyeth them, and them that are overturned He restoreth entire. (Job 12:23) We may understand that ‘the Lord multiplieth the nations and destroyeth them,’ in this way, that day by day men are born destined to die, and that ‘them, that be overturned, He restoreth entire,’ in that they, who were dead, shall rise again. However we shall interpret in a better sense, if we think how it is that this is done in their souls. For ‘He increaseth the nations and destroyeth them,’ in that He both enlarges them by fruitfulness of offspring, and yet leaves them in their own infidelity; but ‘them, that were overturned, He restoreth entire,’ in that those, whom He had left in the downfall of infidelity, He one time or another reestablishes in the seat of faith. And these being restored in a whole state of mind, that ancient People, which seemed faithful to God, being reprobate was cast away in heart, so that, being deceived by its own misbelief, it should afterwards rise up against Him, Whom it had before preached.

I lifted my arms up to the sky, towards the grace of the Lord.
He took off and threw my chains far away from me.
My protector raised me in accordance with his grace and salvation.
I was stripped off of darkness and clothed with light; My limbs no longer suffer from sadness, anguish or pain.
The thought of the Lord assisted me;
His light overjoyed me;
I walked in His presence;
As I praise and glorify Him, I will approach Him.
My heart has over flown; it reached my mouth,
Came out on my lips.
The joy of the Lord and his praise enlighten my face.
Alleluia! I escaped my chains and ran to you, my God!
You have been my right hand, my salvation and help.
You kept back those who rose up against me and they disappeared.
Your face was with me and your grace saved me.
I was scorned and condemned in the eyes of the majority.
But you gave me strength and aid.
You placed the light at my right side and left side.
May everything in me be only light! I put on the clothes of your Spirit,
And you took off from me the leather garments you had first clothed me with (Gn 3,21).
Your right hand raised me and chased the sickness away from me.
Your truth made me strong and your justice sanctified me.
I was justified by your love so sweet,
