It was to the apostles when they were gathered together that the Truth said: “The Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things” (Jn 14:26). In fact, just at the time when the apostles saw tongues appear and divine fire resting on each one of them (Acts 2:3) that they saw in an instant, by an interior illumination, all the Scriptures and prophets. (…) They penetrated those secrets that remained closed to the scribes and Pharisees, to wise men and doctors of the Law. Thus the word of the Lord was fulfilled: “You hid these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to mere children” (Mt 11:25). (…) Those unlettered men had not been taught by men but marvelously instructed by the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of understanding (Is 11:2) who opened the treasures of the Scriptures to them. Hence they have the right to be received and listened to by us as coming from the mouth of God himself (cf Lk 10 :16). (…) Our faith is founded on theirs as also on the patriarchs and prophets to whom the Word of God made itself heard by the same Spirit, without the intermediary of anyone else. As for all the rest who were not present and who did not learn in that way, we believe what they say not because of their personal opinion but because they base their sayings on the witness of the apostles. For it is to the apostles that the Revelation was given (…); it was revealed to them by the Holy Spirit what mere men could not neither teach nor know. And we keep to this foundation.
