Thursday, September 21 : Saint John Cassian
Great in truth, and marvelous, and unknown deeply to men, if not to those who have experienced it, are the generosity that God, in his ineffable liberality, grants his faithful, even during in this corrupted vase. (…) Who would not be surprised before the works of God and writte from the bottom of his heart: “I knew that the Lord is great” (PS 134.5 vg), when he sees himself, from the extreme greed to liberality, from prodigality to a life of abstinence, from superb to humility (…)? These are in truth the divine wonders that the soul of the prophet and those which resemble him, discover with astonishment in a contemplation full of miracles. Because what bigger prodigy, than to see in a brief moment the greedy publicans become apostles, the fierce persecutors change into preachers of the Gospel ready to undergo everything, and propagate at the price of their blood the faith they were pursuing? These are the divine works that the son attests to perform every day, in union with his father: “My father acts until today, and I too I act. “(Jn 5,17) These are the works of God that Blessed David sings in Spirit:” Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone makes wonders! “(PS 71,18 vg) It is about them that the Prophet Amos speaks:” He did all things, and he changes them; He changed the shadow of death in the morning. “(AM 5.8 LXX)” These are, in fact, the changes in the right of the Most High. “(PS 76,11 vg) It is on this work of salvation that the prophet addresses to the Lord this prayer: “Strengthen, O God, what you have done in us!” »(PS 67.29 VG) (…) Yes, this is indeed the great miracle of God, that a man of flesh rejected any carnal inclination, that, among so many various circumstances, so many assaults given to him, he keeps his soul in the same disposition , and remains motionless in the middle of the incessant flow of events.
