Tuesday, October 8 : Saint Augustine
Our Lord’s words teach us that though we labor among the many distractions of this world, we should have but one goal. For we are but travelers on a journey without as yet a fixed abode; we are on our way, not yet in our native land; we are in a state of longing, not yet of enjoyment. But let us continue on our way, and continue without sloth or respite, so that we may ultimately arrive at our destination. To prepare a meal for the Savior, Martha was in charge of numerous concerns; while Mary her sister prefered to be nourished by Him; She therefore left Martha to the multiple occupations of service, as she sat down at the feet of the Lord and quietly listened to His word. Docile and faithful, she had heard these words: “Be still, and see that I am the Lord. (PS 45,11) Thus one of the two sisters was agitated, and the other was at the table; One was preparing a lot and the other saw only one thing. (…) What does the Lord say to Martha? “Mary chose the best part”. Yours is not bad, but hers is better. Why better? Because “it will not be removed” We will one day take you on this burden imposed by the needs of others: the delights of truth are eternal. We will therefore not take away the choice she made; We do not take it away, but we add to it; We add to this life, in the other we will have fullness, and it will never be taken from us!
