God could answer: “My Son is my entire locution and response; vision and revelation, which I have already spoken, answered, manifested, and revealed to you by giving him to you as a brother, companion, master, ransom, and reward… ‘This is my beloved Son in I am well pleased, hear him’ (Mt 17,5). If you desire me to answer with a word of comfort, behold my Son subject to me and to others out of love for me, and afflicted, and you will see how much he answers you. If you desire me to declare some secret truths or events to you, fix your eyes only on him and you will discern hidden in him the most secret mysteries and wisdom, and wonders of God, as my Apostle proclaims: “In the Son of God are hidden all the treasures of the wisdom and knowledge of God” (Col 2,3). These treasures of wisdom and knowledge will be for you far more sublime, delightful, and advantageous than what you want to know. The apostle, therefore, gloried, affirming that he had acted as though he knew no other than “Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1Cor 2,2). And if you should seek other divine or corporeal visions and revelations, behold him, become human, and you will find more than you imagine. For the apostle Paul also says: “In Christ all the fullness of the divinity dwells bodily” (Col 2,9).” One should not, then, inquire of God in this manner, nor is it necessary for God to speak any more…: there is no more faith to reveal, nor will there ever be.

لَقَدْ نَزَلَتِ ٱلْقُوَّةُ ٱلْإِلَهِيَّةُ ٱلَّتِي لَا يَسْتَطِيعُ ٱلْإِنْسَانُ أَنْ يَلْمِسَهَا، وَٱلْتَحَفَتْ بِجَسَدٍ مَلْمُوس، كَيْ يَتَمَكَّنَ ٱلْفُقَرَاءُ مِنْ لَمْسِهَا، وَمِنْ خِلَالِ لَمْسِ إِنْسَانِيَّةِ ٱلرَّبِّ يَسُوعَ ٱلْمَسِيح، يُدْرِكُونَ أُلُوهِيَّتَهُ. بِوَاسِطَةِ أَصَابِعَ مِنْ لَحْم، شَعَرَ ٱلْأَصَمُّ ٱلْأَبْكَمُ بِأَنَّ أَحَدًا يَلْمِسُ أُذُنَيْهِ وَلِسَانَهُ. وَبِوَاسِطَةِ أَصَابِعَ مَلْمُوسَة، أَدْرَكَ ٱلْأُلُوهِيَّةَ ٱلَّتِي لَا تُلْمَس، عِنْدَمَا ٱنْحَلَّتْ عُقْدَةُ لِسَانِهِ، وَٱنْفَتَحَتْ أُذُنَاهُ. لِأَنَّ خَالِقَ ٱلْجَسَدِ وَصَانِعَهُ جَاءَ إِلَيْهِ، وَبِكَلِمَةٍ حَنُونَة، خَلَقَ دُونَ أَلَمٍ فَتَحَاتٍ فِي أُذُنَيْنِ صَمَّاوَيْنِ. وَحِينَئِذٍ أَيْضًا، هٰذَا ٱلْفَمُ ٱلَّذِي لَمْ يُخْرِجْ كَلِمَةً إِلَى ٱلنُّور، أَخْرَجَ إِلَى ٱلْعَالَمِ تَسْبِحَةَ ٱلَّذِي جَعَلَ ٱلْعُقْمَ مُثْمِرًا. كَذٰلِكَ فَإِنَّ ٱلرَّبَّ يَسُوعَ “تَفَلَ فِي ٱلْأَرْض، فَجَبَلَ مِنْ تُفَالِهِ طِينًا، وَطَلَى بِهِ عَيْنَيِ ٱلْأَعْمَى” (يو ٩: ٦)، لِيُفْهِمَنَا أَنَّ شَيْئًا كَانَ يَنْقُصُهُ، كَمَا كَانَ ٱلْحَالُ مَعَ ٱلْأَصَمِّ ٱلْأَبْكَم. فَقَدْ أُزِيلَ نَقْصٌ فِطْرِيٌّ مِنْ جِبِلَّتِنَا ٱلْبَشَرِيَّةِ بِفَضْلِ خَمِيرَةِ جَسَدِهِ ٱلْكَامِل… وَلِكَيْ يُعَوِّضَ مَا يَنْقُصُ هٰذِهِ ٱلْأَجْسَادَ ٱلْبَشَرِيَّة، أَعْطَى شَيْئًا مِنْ ذَاتِهِ، كَمَا يُعْطِينَا ذَاتَهُ [فِي ٱلْإِفْخَارِسْتِيَّا]. وَبِهٰذِهِ ٱلْوَسِيلَةِ يُزِيلُ ٱلْعُيُوبَ وَيُقِيمُ ٱلْمَوْتَى، لِكَيْ نَعْتَرِفَ أَنَّهُ، بِفَضْلِ جَسَدِهِ حَيْثُ “يَحِلُّ جَمِيعُ كَمَالِ ٱلْأُلُوهِيَّة” (كول ٢: ٩)، تُعَوَّضُ عُيُوبُ إِنْسَانِيَّتِنَا، وَأَنَّ ٱلْحَيَاةَ ٱلْحَقِيقِيَّةَ تُعْطَى لِلْفَانِينَ بِوَاسِطَةِ هٰذَا ٱلْجَسَدِ ٱلَّذِي فِيهِ تَسْكُنُ ٱلْحَيَاةُ ٱلْحَقِيقِيَّة.

Si vosotros creéis en Cristo, haced las obras de Cristo, para que se avive vuestra fe; el amor animará esta fe, la acción será la prueba. Vosotros que pretendéis permanecer en Cristo Jesús, os es necesario caminar a su mismo `paso. Si vosotros queréis encontrar la gloria, si envidiáis a los dichosos de este mundo, si decís mal de los ausentes y devolvéis mal por mal, son cosas que Cristo no ha hecho. Decís que conocéis a Dios, pero vuestros actos lo niegan… “Este hombre me honra con los labios, dice la Escritura, pero su corazón está lejos de mí” (Is 29,13). (…) Ahora bien la fe recta, no basta para hacer un santo, un hombre recto, si no obra el amor. Quien está sin amor es incapaz de amar a la Esposa, la Iglesia de Cristo. Y las obras, aún realizadas en la rectitud no llegan sin la fe a hacer un corazón justo. No se puede atribuir la rectitud a un hombre que no agrada a Dios; ahora bien, dice la epístola a los Hebreos: “Sin la fe, es imposible agradar a Dios”(Hb 11,6). Aquel que no agrada a Dios, no puede agradarle. Pero aquel a quien Dios agrada no podrá desagradar a Dios. Y aquel a quien Dios no agrada, la Iglesia-Esposa tampoco le agrada. Como pues podría ser recto, aquel que no ama a Dios ni a su Iglesia, a la cual se ha dicho: “los justos saben amarte” (Ct 1,3 Vulgata). Al santo, no basta la fe sin obras, ni las obras sin la fe, para hacer justa al alma. Hermanos, nosotros que creemos en Cristo nos es necesario procurar seguir una vía recta. Elevemos a Dios nuestros corazones y nuestras manos juntas, afin de ser encontrados enteramente rectos confirmando con hechos de rectitud, la rectitud de nuestra fe, amando a la Iglesia- Esposa, y amados del Esposo, nuestro Señor Jesucristo, bendito por Dios en los siglos.

When he asked: “Where have you laid him?”, tears came to our Lord’s eyes. His tears were like rain, Lazarus was like seed and the tomb like the earth. He cried out in a voice like thunder and death trembled at his voice. Lazarus sprang up like the seed, came out and worshiped the Lord who had raised him up. Jesus… restored life to Lazarus and died in his place for, when he drew him out of the tomb and sat down at his table, he himself was symbolically buried by the oil Mary poured over his head (Mt 26,7). The power of the death that had overcome him for four days was wiped out… that death might know how easy it was for the Lord to overcome it on the third day… His promise is truthful: he had promised that he himself would come to life again on the third day (Mt 16,21)… Therefore the Lord restored their joy to Mary and Martha by treading down death to demonstrate that he himself would not be held by death for ever… From now on, every time someone says that rising on the third day is impossible, let them consider him who was raised on the fourth day… “Go and take away the stone.” What is this? He who raised a dead man and restored him to life, couldn’t he have opened the tomb and overturned the stone? He who said to his disciples: “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain: ‘Move from here to there’” (Mt 17,20), could he not move aside the stone, shutting the entrance to the tomb with one word? Certainly he could! He whose voice, when he hung on the cross, split rocks and sepulchers, could have taken away the stone with his word (Mt 27,51-52). But because he was Lazarus’ friend, he said: “Open it that the smell of decay may hit you, and you who wrapped him in his winding sheet, unbind him, that you may surely recognize the one you buried.”

Do you believe in Christ ? Do the works of Christ so that your faith may live; love will animate your faith, deed will reveal it… If you say you abide in Christ you ought to walk as he walked. But if you seek your own glory, envy the successful, slander the absent, take revenge on those who injure you, this Christ did not do. You profess to know God, yet reject him by your deeds… “Such a one honors me with his lips, but his heart is far from me” (Is 29,13; Mt 15,8)… You see then that right faith will not make a man righteous unless it is enlivened by love. Someone who has no love has no means of loving the Bride, Christ’s Church. But on the other hand, deeds, however righteous, cannot make the heart righteous without faith. Who would call a person righteous who does not please God? But “without faith it is impossible to please God” (Heb 11,6). And God cannot please the one who is not pleasing to him; for if God is pleasing to someone, that person cannot displease God. Furthermore, if God is not pleasing to that person, neither is his Bride, the Church. How then can he be righteous who loves neither God nor God’s Church, to whom is said: “The righteous love you”? (Sg 1,3 Vg.). If therefore neither faith without good works nor good works without faith suffice for a man’s righteousness, we, my brothers, who believe in Christ, should strive to ensure that our behavior and desires are righteous. Let us raise up both our hearts and hands to God, that our whole being may be righteous, our righteous faith being revealed in our righteous actions. So we shall be lovers of the Bride, the Church, and loved by the Bridegroom Jesus Christ our Lord, who is God, blessed for ever.

There is no changing of intentions in the Creator, neither before nor after: there is neither hate nor resentment in his nature, nor is there a bigger or a smaller place in his love, nor a before or an after in his knowledge. For if we all believe that creation began to exist as a consequence of the goodness and love of the Creator, we know that this first motive will not die down nor will it change in the Creator, following the disorderly course of his creation. It would be quite obnoxious and really blasphemous to believe that hate and resentment exist in God – even towards the demons – or to imagine other weaknesses or passions in Him. On the contrary, God acts towards us always in ways he knows being profitable for us, that these may be for us cause of suffering or of consolation, of joy or of sorrow, that they may be insignificant or glorious – all are oriented towards the same everlasting goods.

Para san José, la vida de Jesús fue un continuo descubrimiento de la propia vocación. Recordábamos antes aquellos primeros años llenos de circunstancias en aparente contraste: glorificación y huida, majestuosidad de los Magos y pobreza del portal, canto de los Ángeles y silencio de los hombres. Cuando llega el momento de presentar al Niño en el Templo, José, que lleva la ofrenda modesta de un par de tórtolas, ve cómo Simeón y Ana proclaman que Jesús es el Mesías. Su padre y su madre escuchaban con admiración, dice San Lucas. Más tarde, cuando el Niño se queda en el Templo sin que María y José lo sepan, al encontrarlo de nuevo después de tres días de búsqueda, el mismo evangelista narra que se maravillaron. José se sorprende, José se admira. Dios le va revelando sus designios y él se esfuerza por entenderlos. Como toda alma que quiera seguir de cerca a Jesús, descubre en seguida que no es posible andar con paso cansino, que no cabe la rutina. Porque Dios no se conforma con la estabilidad en un nivel conseguido, con el descanso en lo que ya se tiene. Dios exige continuamente más, y sus caminos no son nuestros humanos caminos. San José, como ningún hombre antes o después de él, ha aprendido de Jesús a estar atento para reconocer las maravillas de Dios, a tener el alma y el corazón abiertos. Pero si José ha aprendido de Jesús a vivir de un modo divino, me atrevería a decir que, en lo humano, ha enseñado muchas cosas al Hijo de Dios…
José ha sido, en lo humano, maestro de Jesús; le ha tratado diariamente, con cariño delicado, y ha cuidado de Él con abnegación alegre. ¿No será ésta una buena razón para que consideremos a este varón justo, a este Santo Patriarca en quien culmina la fe de la Antigua Alianza, como Maestro de vida interior?

For Saint Joseph the life of Jesus was a continuous discovery of his own vocation… His first years were full of apparently contradictory events: glorification and flight, the royal presence of the magi and the poverty of the crib, the song of the angels and the silence of men. When the time came to present the child in the Temple, Joseph, who brought the poor offering of a pair of turtle doves, witnessed Simeon and Anna proclaim Jesus to be the Christ: “The Child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him,” Saint Luke says (2,33). And later on, when the Child remains in the Temple without either Mary or Joseph knowing about it, the same evangelist relates that “they were astonished” when they found him again three days later (2,48). Joseph is taken aback, amazed. God reveals his designs to him little by little and he tries hard to grasp them. Like any soul who wants to follow Jesus closely, he discovers at once that it is not possible to move forward carelessly and that there is no place for mere routine. To stop on reaching a certain level and rest on one’s laurels is not enough for God. He demands ever more from us and his ways are not our ways. Saint Joseph learned from Jesus, as no other has done, to open his soul and  heart and keep on the watch to recognise God’s wonderful works. But if Joseph learned from Jesus to live divinely yet, if I may say so, at the human level it was he who taught many things to the Son of God… Joseph took care of this Child as he had been commanded to do and he turned Jesus into a workman by passing on his trade to him… At the human level, Joseph was Jesus’ teacher. Every day he surrounded him with tender affection; he cared for him with joyful self-denial. Isn’t this one good reason for considering this just man (Mt 1,19), this holy patriarch in whom the faith of the Old Testament is brought to fulfilment, to be a teacher of the interior life?
