Mount Sinai is symbolic of Mount Zion (…) Note well how the two testaments mirror one another and with what accord the feast of Pentecost is celebrated by each of them (…) On the same day, and in a very similar manner, the Lord came down on Mount Zion just as he did on Mount Sinai (…) Luke wrote: “Suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them” (Acts 2:2-3) (…) Yes, a loud noise was heard from every direction and fire was seen. On Sinai there was a thick cloud, but on Mount Zion the shining of a brilliant light. In the former case it was a question of “a copy and shadow” (Heb 8:5), but in the second of perfect reality. Formerly thunder was to be heard, now the voice of the apostles was perceived. On the one hand flashes of lightening, on the other wonders shone out in every place (…). “All left the camp to meet God at the foot of the mountain” (cf. Ex 19:17). And in the Acts of the Apostles we read that: “At the sound the people gathered in a large crowd” (…) People from the whole of Jerusalem gathered together at the foot of the mountain of Zion, in other words, in the place where Zion, prefiguration of holy Church, began to be built up and to lay its foundations (…). “Mount Sinai was all wrapped in smoke, for the Lord came down upon it in fire” (v. 18) (…) How could those set alight by the great fire of the Holy Spirit not burn? As smoke indicates the presence of fire, so the fire of the Holy Spirit manifested its presence in the apostles’ hearts by the conviction with which they spoke and by their different languages. How happy the hearts that are filled with this fire! How happy those who burn with this heat! “The whole mountain trembled violently. The trumpet blast grew louder and louder” (vv. 18-19) (…) Even so, the voice and preaching of the apostles became ever stronger; they made themselves heard further and further away until “through all the earth their voice resounded, and to the ends of the world their message” (Ps 19[18]:5).

I will not now speak many things with you. For the prince of this world: cometh: and in me he hath not any thing.
But that the world may know that I love the Father: and as the Father hath given me commandments, so do I. Arise, let us go hence.

|The Spirit] came down to clothe the Apostles with power, and to baptize them; for the Lord says, you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Acts 1:5 This grace was not in part, but His power was in full perfection; for as he who plunges into the waters and is baptized is encompassed on all sides by the waters, so were they also baptized completely by the Holy Ghost. The water however flows round the outside only, but the Spirit baptizes also the soul within, and that completely. And wherefore do you wonder? Take an example from matter; poor indeed and common, yet useful for the simpler sort. If the fire passing in through the mass of the iron makes the whole of it fire, so that what was cold becomes burning and what was black is made bright — if fire which is a body thus penetrates and works without hindrance in iron which is also a body, why wonder that the Holy Ghost enters into the very inmost recesses of the soul?…”And it filled all the house where they were sitting”; for the house became the vessel of the spiritual water; as the disciples sat within, the whole house was filled. Thus they were entirely baptized according to the promise, and invested soul and body with a divine garment of salvation. “And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost”. They partook of fire, not of burning but of saving fire; of fire which consumes the thorns of sins, but gives lustre to the soul. This is now coming upon you also, and that to strip away and consume your sins which are like thorns, and to brighten yet more that precious possession of your souls, and to give you grace; for He gave it then to the Apostles. And He sat upon them in the form of fiery tongues, that they might crown themselves with new and spiritual diadems by fiery tongues upon their heads. A fiery sword barred of old the gates of Paradise; a fiery tongue which brought salvation restored the gift.

Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit;
there are different forms of service but the same Lord;
there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.
As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem.
At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?
Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language?
We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome,
both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.”

Si hay una característica que sobresale en los escritos de san Juan, es el amor… Ciertamente que Juan no es el único autor de los orígenes cristianos que habla del amor. Siendo el amor, constitutivo y esencial al cristianismo, todos los autores del Nuevo Testamento, hablan de él, si bien que con acentos diversos. Si nos tomamos un tiempo para reflexionar sobre este tema en san Juan, es porque él nos trazó, con insistencia y de manera incisiva, las líneas principales. Nos remitimos, pues, a sus palabras. Una cosa es cierta: san Juan no ha hecho un tratado abstracto, filosófico o incluso teológico, sobre qué es el amor. No, Juan no es un teórico. En efecto, el verdadero amor, por su misma naturaleza, no es nunca puramente especulativo, sino que está en referencia directa, concreta y verificable, a unas personas reales. Pues bien, Juan, en tanto que apóstol y amigo de Jesús, nos hace ver cuales son los componentes, o mejor, las fases del amor cristiano. El primer componente concierne a la fuente misma del amor, que el apóstol Juan sitúa en Dios, llegando a afirmar que “Dios es amor” (1Jn 4,16). Juan es el único autor del Nuevo Testamento que nos da una especie de definición de Dios. Dice, por ejemplo, que “Dios es Espíritu” (Jn 4,24), o que “Dios es luz” (1Jn 1,15). Aquí, por una intuición fulgurante, proclama que “Dios es amor”. Remarquémoslo bien: no ha afirmado simplemente que “Dios ama” y, menos aún, que “el amor es Dios”. En otras palabras, Juan no se limita a describir el actuar divino, sino que remonta hasta sus raíces. Además, no quiere atribuir una cualidad divina a un amor genérico y, tal vez, impersonal. No se remonta hasta el amor de Dios, sino que se vuelve directamente hacia Dios para definir su naturaleza a través de la dimensión infinita del amor. Por aquí, Juan quiere decir que  el constitutivo esencial de Dios es el amor, y que, por consiguiente, toda la actividad de Dios nace del amor y está marcada por el amor. Todo lo que Dios hace, lo hace por amor y con amor, incluso si nosotros no podamos comprender inmediatamente que es amor, verdadero amor.

Pedro, volviéndose, vio que lo seguía el discípulo al que Jesús amaba, el mismo que durante la Cena se había reclinado sobre Jesús y le había preguntado: “Señor, ¿quién es el que te va a entregar?”.
Cuando Pedro lo vio, preguntó a Jesús: “Señor, ¿y qué será de este?”.
Jesús le respondió: “Si yo quiero que él quede hasta mi venida, ¿qué te importa? Tú sígueme”.
Entonces se divulgó entre los hermanos el rumor de que aquel discípulo no moriría, pero Jesús no había dicho a Pedro: “El no morirá”, sino: “Si yo quiero que él quede hasta mi venida, ¿qué te importa?”.
Este mismo discípulo es el que da testimonio de estas cosas y el que las ha escrito, y sabemos que su testimonio es verdadero.
Jesús hizo también muchas otras cosas. Si se las relata detalladamente, pienso que no bastaría todo el mundo para contener los libros que se escribirían.

El Señor está en su santo Templo, el Señor tiene su trono en el cielo. Sus ojos observan el mundo, sus pupilas examinan a los hombres. El Señor examina al justo y al culpable, y odia al que ama la violencia.
Porque el Señor es justo y ama la justicia, y los que son rectos verán su rostro.
