Friday, May 1 : Blessed Columba Marmion
“I am the way” (Jn 14:6). Between every creature and God, there is infinity. Angels, without supernatural elevation, are at an immeasurable distance from divinity. God alone, by his nature, sees himself as he is; he alone has the right to look into the depths of its perfections. Men only know God through his works: “The cloud and the shadow surround him” (Ps 96:2). Well we are called to see God as he sees himself, to love him as he loves himself and to live the divine life. This is our supernatural destiny. Now between this elevation and the capacities of our nature, there is an impassable abyss. Through Christ, both God and man, and through the grace of adoption, it is given to us to triumph over this estrangement. Christ is like the bridge thrown across this unfathomable depth: through his holy humanity, he is the way, thanks to which we reach the Trinity. Did not Jesus himself say it: “No one comes to the Father except through me” (Jn 14:6). This path is not misleading; he who follows it will infallibly arrive at the end; “he will have the light of life” (Jn 8:12). Because, as Word, Jesus is one with the Father, his humanity therefore necessarily allows us to attain divinity. When he inserts us into his mystical body, in all truth, he takes us to himself, so that we can remain where he himself is”, that is to say, be united with the Word and the Spirit in the bosom of the Father: “I will return to take you to myself, so that where I am, you will also be” (Jn 14:3). So rely in everything on the merits of our dear Savior.
