Saturday, July 18 : Tertullian
God would have been unable to have any communication with us if he had not taken on himself the same emotions and affections as our own. And so he tempered the strength of his majesty, which our weak capacities would no doubt have been incapable of enduring. Such a humbling of himself was degrading for him but necessary for us, and that is why this humbling was worthy of God, for nothing is so worthy of God as human salvation… God’s apparent loss is our gain; what some might consider disgraceful of my God is in fact the sacrament of our salvation. God acted thus towards us so that we might learn to act as God does. God dealt on equal terms with us so that we might be able to deal on equal terms with God. God became small so that we might become very great.
