Sunday, March 22 : John Tauler
“I am the light of the world” (Jn 8:12). He is the light that gives brightness to all the lights of the earth: to material lights such as the sun, the moon, the stars, and the bodily senses of man, and also to the spiritual light, the human intellect, through which all creatures must flow back to their origin. Without this return, these created lights are in themselves true darkness, compared to that true light by essence, which is a light for the whole world. Our dear Lord says to us: “Renounce your light, which is truly darkness compared to mine and is opposed to me, for I am the true light, and in exchange for your darkness I wish to give you my eternal light, so that it may belong to you as it does to me, and that you may have, as I do, my being, my life, my happiness, and my joy.” What, then, is the shortest path that leads to the true light? This is the path: truly to renounce oneself, to love and seek only God…, to desire in nothing one’s own interest but to seek only the honor and glory of God, to expect everything directly from God and, without any detour or intermediary, to refer all things back to him, wherever they may come from, so that between God and us there may be a completely immediate flow and return. This is the true, the straight path.
