The Church, sent by Christ to reveal and to communicate the love of God to all men and nations, is aware that there still remains a gigantic missionary task for her to accomplish… The Church, in order to be able to offer all of them the mystery of salvation and the life brought by God, must implant herself into these groups for the same motive which led Christ to bind Himself, in virtue of His Incarnation, to certain social and cultural conditions of those human beings among whom He dwelt… For all Christians, wherever they live, are bound to show forth, by the example of their lives and by the witness of the word, that new man put on at baptism and that power of the Holy Spirit by which they have been strengthened at Conformation. Thus other men, observing their good works, can glorify the Father and can perceive more fully the real meaning of human life and the universal bond of the community of mankind. (cf Col 3,10; Mt 5,16). In order that they may be able to bear more fruitful witness to Christ, let them be joined to those men by esteem and love; let them acknowledge themselves to be members of the group of men among whom they live; let them share in cultural and social life… and gladly and reverently lay bare the seeds of the Word which lie hidden among their fellows. At the same time, however, let them look to the: profound changes which are taking place among nations, and let them exert themselves to keep modern man, intent as he is on the science and technology of today’s world from becoming a stranger to things divine; rather, let them awaken in him a yearning for that truth and charity which God has revealed. Even as Christ Himself searched the hearts of men, and led them to divine light, so also His disciples, profoundly penetrated by the Spirit of Christ, should show the people among whom they live, and should converse with them, that they themselves may learn by sincere and patient dialogue what treasures a generous God has distributed among the nations of the earth. But at the same time, let them try to furbish these treasures, set them free, and bring them under the dominion of God their Savior.

إنّ الكنيسة التي أرسلها الربّ يسوع لتُعلِنَ لجميع البشر والشعوب وتبثّهم محبةَ الله، تعلمُ أنّ مجالَ عملها الرسولي لا يزالُ واسعًا. ولكي تستطيعَ الكنيسةُ أن تقدّم للجميع سرَّ الخلاص والحياة الآتية من لدُنِ الله، يلزمُها أن تتسلّل في جموعِ هذه الجماعات كلِّها، يحرّكها الدافع نفسُه الذي حملَ الرّب يسوع، في تجسّده، على التقيّد بالأوضاع الاجتماعية والثقافيّة التي كانت ثابتةً فيما بين البشر الذين عايشَهم. وهكذا فمن واجبِ المؤمنين جميعهم، حيثما كانوا، أن يُظهِروا بمَثَلِ سلوكهم، وشهادة كلمتهم، الإنسانَ الجديدَ الذي لبسوه بالمعموديّة وقوّة الرُّوح القدس الذي أولاهم بسرّ التثبيت دعمًا، حتّى إذا رأى الآخرون أعمالَهم الصالحة يُمجّدون الآب (راجع مت 5: 16)، ويفقَهون فقهًا كاملاً معنى الحياة الإنسانيّة الحقيقي، وحقيقة الرابطة الجامعة في الأسرة البشريّة. ولكي يستطيعوا أن يُؤدّوا شهادة المسيح هذه تأديةً مُثمرةً، يجب أن ينضمّوا إلى هؤلاء البشر بالتقدير والمحبّة، مُدركين أنّهم أعضاءٌ في مجموعةِ البشر التي يعيشون فيها، وأن يُسهِموا في الحياة الثقافيّة والاجتماعية…، وأن يكتشفوا بغبطةٍ واحترام بذورَ الكلمة المُستترة فيها، وعليهم أن يتنبّهوا في الوقتِ نفسِه للانقلاب العميق الذي يجري بين الأمم، وأن يسعوا جُهدَهم في أن يتحوّل أبناءُ هذا العصر عن الأمور الإلهيّة بسبب شدّة انقيادهم للعلوم ولتكنولوجيا العالم الحديث، بل أن يكونوا بالأحرى أشدّ تيقّظًا في تطلّبِ الحقيقة والمحبّة اللتين من وحي الله تطلّبًا أشدّ حرارة واضطرامًا. وكما سبرَ الرّبُّ يَسُوع نفسُه قلبَ البشر وحوّلهم بالحوار الإنساني، الحقيقي الإنسانيّة، إلى النور الإلهي، كذلك يجب على تلاميذِه، وقد أُشبعوا من روحِ المسيح، أن يعرفوا الناسَ الذين يعيشون فيما بينهم، وأن يُحادثوهم، لكي يقفوا أيضًا، بالحوار الصادق والصبور، على الكُنوزِ التي وزّعها الله في جودِه، على الأمم، ويجب عليهم في الوقت نفسِه أن يعملوا على إنارةِ هذه الكنوز بنور الإنجيل، وتحريرها، وإخضاعِها لسُلطان اللهِ المُخلّص.

The Lord said to the Eleven: “These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick and they will recover”. In the primitive Church all the signs the Lord lists here were fulfilled to the letter, not only by the apostles but many other of the saints. The Gentiles would not have abandoned the worship of idols if the gospel preaching had not been confirmed with so many signs and wonders. Indeed, did not the disciples preach “a crucified Christ, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,” according to Saint Paul’s saying? (1Cor 1,23)… As for us, from now on signs and wonders are no longer needed: it is enough for us to read or hear an account of those that have happened. For we believe in the Gospel, we believe in the Scriptures that relate them. And yet signs still take place daily and, if we would mark them well, we would acknowledge that they have far more worth than the concrete miracles of former times. Every day priests administer baptism and call to conversion: isn’t this to cast out demons? Every day they speak a new language when they explain holy Scripture by replacing the old letter with the newness of its spiritual sense. They put serpents to flight when they free sinners’ hearts from their attachment to evil with gentle exhortation… They heal the sick when they reconcile weak souls to God with their prayers. Such are the signs the Lord had promised his saints; it is these they accomplish even today.

عندما يتولّى الله إيقاف قدرة أيّ إنسان على الفهم أو تعليقَها لفترة من الزمن، فهو يعطيه لقاءَها ما يثيرُ الدهشةَ ويشغلُ العقول. وبالتالي، من دون أن نفكّر، وأثناء تلاوتنا لقانون الإيمان، نحصل على تنوير خاصّ يفوق إلى حدّ كبير كلّ ما يمكننا اكتسابه على مرّ السنوات حتّى ولو بذلنا قصارى جهدنا. وإذا ما حاولنا من تلقاء أنفسنا تقييد قدراتنا الرُّوحيّة وعرقلة نشاطها، فسيكون ذلك ضربًا من الجنون… خلال عدّة سنوات، قرأت الكثير من الأمور بدون أن أفهمها. ثمّ أمضيتُ وقتًا طويلاً بدون أن أفلح في إيجاد التعابير المناسبة لأشرح النِّعَم التي منحها الله لي، وقد شكّل ذلك مصدر ألم كبير بالنسبة إليّ. ولكن، حين يشاء الله، يعلّمني كلّ شيء في لحظة وبطريقة تثير دهشتي. يمكنني أن أشهد على هذا الأمر بكلّ صدق. فقد حاولَ عددٌ كبيرٌ من الرجال الروحيّين الذين قابلتهم أن يشرحوا لي النِّعَم التي وهبها الله لنفسي، آملين بأن يساعدوني على إدراكها. ولكنّ سذاجتي كانت تجعلُ جهودَهم غير مجدية تمامًا. ربّما كانت تلك مشيئة ربّنا لكي أدين له وحده بالشكر والامتنان. في الواقع، لطالما كانَ هو وحدُهُ معلّمي. فليتباركَ اسمُه! ولكن أيضًا أشعرُ بحيرةٍ كبيرةٍ عندما يكون هذا الاعتراف الذي أقوم به تعبيرًا عن الحقيقة!… إذًا، بدون أي رغبة أو طلب منّي، نوّرني الله بلحظة وجعلني قادرة على التعبير عن نفسي، حتّى أنّ الذين اعترفتُ لهم تعجّبوا، وأنا كنتُ أكثر تعجّبًا منهم لأنّني كنت أعلم بمدى عجزي عن إدراك هذه الأمور… نعم، أقول مجدّدًا، إنّه لمن المهمّ جدًّا ألاّ نرفع أرواحنا بأنفسنا قبل أن يبادر الله نفسه إلى رفعها، وعندما يفعل ذلك، سوف نفهمه فورًا.

هذا الخبز الذي ترونه على المذبح، الذي كرّسته كلمة الربّ، هو جسد الرّب يسوع المسيح. هذه الكأس التي كرّستها كلمة الرب، أو بالأحرى كرّست ما بداخلها، هي دم الرّب يسوع المسيح، فقد أراد الرب بهذه العناصر أن يجعل من جسده ودمه الذي هرق لغفران خطايانا موضع عبادتنا وحبنا. وإذا ما تناولتموه وأنتم أهل لهم، سوف تصبحون ما تتناولون. فعلى حدّ قول القديس بولس: ” فلمَّا كانَ هُناكَ خُبزٌ واحِد، فنَحنُ على كَثرَتِنا جَسَدٌ واحِد، لأَنَّنا نَشتَرِكُ كُلُّنا في هذا الخُبْزِ الواحِد.” (1كور 10: 17)… هذا الخبز يذكركم بمقدار محبتكم للوحدة. هل صُنع هذا الخبز من حبة قمح واحدة؟ ألم يكن هناك عدد كبير من حبوب القمح أوّلاً؟ وقبل أن تتخذ هذه الحبوب شكل الخبز، كانت تلك الحبوب منفصلة، فجاءت المياه لتجمعها بعد أن خضعت للطحن؛ فإذا لم يخضع القمح للطحن أوّلاً ولم يُنقع بالماء، لن يتخذ شكل الخبز. كذلك فقد كنتم كالمطحونين بذلّ الصيام والتنقية، من ثم يأتي ماء العماد ليغمركم حتى تتخذوا شكل الخبز. ولكن الخبز لا ينضج من دون نار. وبماذا تتمثل النار هنا؟ بالميرون المقدس، لأنّ الزيت الذي يغذي نارنا هو سرّ الرُّوح القدس…؛ يوم العنصرة، انكشف الرُّوح القدس على شكل ألسنة من نار… يأتي الرُّوح القدس إذًا هنا كالنار بعد الماء فتصبحون ذلك الخبز الذي هو جسد الرَّب يسوع المسيح. ولذلك فإنّ هذا السر بمثابة رمز للوحدة.

“Happy the man who… meditates on the Law day and night. He is like a tree planted near running water, that yields its fruit in due season” (Ps 1,1-3). O my God, you tell me how happy I shall be, happy with a true happiness, happy on the last day… and that, wretched though I be, I am a palm tree planted near running waters, waters running with your divine will, your divine love and grace… and that I shall yield my fruit in due season. Thus you deign to comfort me. It seems to me that I am without fruit, without any good works, and I say to myself: I was converted eleven years ago and what have I done? What comparison is there between the works accomplished by the saints and my own? I see myself with hands completely empty. But you deign to comfort me; you tell me: “You will bear fruit in your season”… What season is this? The season that comes to all of us is the hour of judgement. And you promise me that, if I persevere with good will and in the struggle, however small I see myself to be, I shall yield fruit at the final hour.

“When the Lord suspends the intellect and causes it to stop, He Himself gives it that which holds its attention and makes it marvel; and without reflection it understands more in the space of a Creed than we can understand with all our earthly diligence in many years. Trying to keep the soul’s faculties busy and thinking you can make them be quiet is foolish… Many years passed by in which I read a lot of things and didn’t understand anything of what I read. For a long time, even though God favored me, I didn’t know what words to use to explain His favors; and this was no small trial. In a way amazing to me, His Majesty when He desires teaches me everything in a moment. One thing I can truthfully say: although I spoke with many spiritual persons who wanted to explain what the Lord was giving me so that I would be able to speak about it, my dullness was truly so great that their explanations benefited me neither little nor much. Or maybe, since His Majesty has always been my Master, it was the Lord’s desire that I have no one else to thank. May He be blessed forever because it is very disconcerting for me to speak in all truth about His favors. Without my desiring or asking … , God gave me in a moment completely clear understanding so that I knew how to explain His favor in a way that amazed me more than it did my confessors; for I understood better than they my own dullness… Once again I counsel that it is very important for the spirit not to ascend unless the Lord raise it up. What this statement means is quite apparent.

This bread you see on the altar, consecrated by the word of God, is the body of Christ. This cup consecrated by the word of God, or rather its contents, is the blood of Christ. In these two elements our Lord desired to hand over for our veneration and love his body and blood, shed for the remission of our sins. If you have received them with a good disposition then you are what you have received. As the apostle Paul declares: “We are, all of us, one bread, one body” (1Cor 10,17)… This bread reminds you how much you ought to love unity. Was this bread made out of only one wheat grain? To begin with weren’t there a large number of grains? Before taking on the form of bread, they were separated. It was water that brought them together once they had been ground. If the wheat isn’t first of all crushed and then soaked one can’t give it the shape of a loaf. In the same way, you have been ground down by the humiliation of fasting and the exorcism of the scrutinies. Then the baptismal water came to soak you so that you could take on the form of bread. However, we can’t make bread without fire. What represents the fire here? Holy chrism. For the oil that feeds our fire is the sacrament of the Holy Spirit… On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit was revealed in the form of tongues of fire… Thus the Holy Spirit comes here like fire after water and you become that bread which is the body of Christ. Thus this sacrament is like a symbol of unity.

[Saint Catherine heard God say to her:] O my dearest daughter, open wide the eye of the intellect to contemplate the abyss of My Charity. There is not a single rational creature whose heart ought not to break under the pressure of love, when considering—after all the blessings with which I have showered you—the benefit you receive in this Sacrament. (…) Who tastes, sees, and touches this Sacrament? The senses of the soul. With what eye does it see it? With the eye of the intellect, provided that eye is furnished with the pupil of most holy Faith. This eye sees, beneath that whiteness, God entire, Man entire—the divine nature united to the human nature; the Body, the Soul, and the Blood of Christ; the Soul united to the Body; and the Body and Soul united to My divine nature, without that nature being separated from Me. (…) And who touches it? The hand of love. Yes, it is with this hand that the soul touches what the eye of the spirit has seen and known in the Sacrament through faith; and it touches with this hand of love to verify what the intellect has seen and known through Faith. Who tastes it? The palate of holy desire. The bodily palate tastes the flavor of bread, whereas the palate of the soul—which is holy desire—tastes the God-Man. You see, therefore, that the senses of the body are here deceived, but not the senses of the soul, by virtue of the light and certainty it possesses within itself. For the eye of the intellect has perceived through the pupil of most holy Faith; having seen, it knows; and then, through the hand of love, it touches—in faith—that which it has known through faith. Finally, through this taste that is within her—through ardent desire—the soul savors what it has seen and touched: the ineffable love of My ardent Charity. It is this Love that has deigned to invite her to receive so great a mystery, together with the grace it produces, in this Sacrament.

[Santa Catalina escuchó a Dios decir:] Queridísima hija, abre bien los ojos de la inteligencia para contemplar el abismo de mi Caridad. No existe una criatura razonable en la que el corazón no se quiebre por la fuerza del Amor, al considerar todos los bienes con los que los he llenado, las gracias que reciben en este Sacramento. (…) ¿Quién gusta y ve y toca este sacramento? Los sentidos del alma. ¿Con qué ojos lo ve? Con los ojos de la inteligencia, si esos ojos poseen la pupila de la santa Fe. Estos ojos ven con pureza a Dios entero, al hombre entero, la naturaleza divina unida a la naturaleza humana. Ven el cuerpo, el alma, la sangre de Cristo, el alma unida a su cuerpo, el cuerpo y el alma unidos a mi naturaleza divina, sin que ella esté separada de Mi. (…) ¿Y quién la toca? Las manos del Amor. Si, es con estas manos que el alma toca lo que los ojos del espíritu han visto y conocido por la fe en el sacramento. Ella toca con sus manos de Amor, asegurándose de aquello que la inteligencia ha visto y conocido por la Fe. ¿Quién lo gusta? El gusto del santo deseo. El gusto corporal gusta el sabor del pan y el gusto del alma -que es el santo deseo- gusta al Dios-hombre. Ves que los sentidos del cuerpo aquí son decepcionados, pero no lo son los sentidos del alma, gracias a la luz y la certeza que ella posee en sí misma. Los ojos de la inteligencia han percibido con la pupila de la santísima Fe. Habiendo visto y conocido, toca con fe, con las manos del Amor lo que ha conocido con la fe. Con ese gusto que está en ella, por el ardiente deseo, el alma gusta lo que vio y tocó, el Amor inefable de mi ardiente Caridad. Es este Amor que ha querido invitarla a recibir un misterio tan grande, con la gracia que produce, en este Sacramento.
